As the day waned, our driver abruptly parked in the middle of a quiet clearing a few dozen meters from the Chobe River. The Baboons who had scurried off upon our arrival soon returned, and resumed their grooming and playing as if we weren't there. Our driver clearly knew what he was doing, and we were treated to a fun little show by the young baboons playing in a large tree. - Suddenly an elephant appeared over the hilltop, walking down the hill toward the river. Then there was another, and then another. Before we knew it, dozens of elephants were in view, all walking toward us. Among them was this mother and her young babe, who came running down the hill toward us. The ground shook with a low rumble as they strolled right past us to the water, seemingly unconcerned by our presence or that of our Land Rover. This fellow was hanging out on one of the many islands created when the Chobe River flooded its banks. He was not pleased with our proximity, and clearly annoyed by our intrusion. My pilot touched the nose of the boat to the island a mere 10 meters from this beast. I was sitting on the floor at the bow of the boat, and this distance was uncomfortably close. But I didn't want to miss the opportunity, so I ignored my gut and went for it! - His massive scarred body jiggled mightily as he effortlessly swung his massive head around, chomping swaths of vegetation with impressive efficiency. Several times he stopped what he was doing, stared me down for a few seconds, then returned to his chow. He seemed increasingly irritated at our presence and after a few minutes he walked into the water. As my pilot backed us away, I could already feel like this event changed me inside somehow. "Trickster" by Jack Spencer Jackal. Jackal. Is it a jackal?? This black-backed jackal loved to hang out around all the Impala. The Impala seemed much less interested in such a social gathering, and always remained on high alert whenever the jackal was nearby. That's probably because a single black-backed jackal is surprisingly capable of taking down large prey like impala with a bite to the soft front of the throat. This guy was more interested in us than he was the impala, but he seemed to like this spot. We even came back to this same area the next day and saw the same jackal hanging around the same herd of Impala.
