Fallout February Prompt 1: Vault Communities

Hope it’s ok to be a little late.

Some rambles about Jacoren, my Vault Dweller Buck, and Vault 13 under cut:

Buck was orphaned as a toddler in the vault, and Jacoren became like a father figure to him; Jacoren in turn saw him as a son. He sends Buck out into the wasteland as a last resort when the two other volunteers never return, and nobody else in the vault will go (and the idea of random selection is met with heavy, heavy backlash). Buck doesn’t have any family in the vault to fight for him to stay, and the closest thing he had to one is the one sending him out.

I see Vault 13 as a whole as... more interested in self-preservation than being selfless.  Overall, everyone wants the vault to be fine but everyone also wants someone else to make it happen. They’re too comfortable in their day to day vault life, even in the face of impending doom. Buck himself doesn’t even want to go, he only goes because Jacoren reluctantly guilt-trips him into it. And while it’s no easy decision, Jacoren is also more comfortable to send out the closest thing he has to a son instead of risking himself, his position, or the vault experiment.
