The late Georges Pichard was born on this day in 1920. Pichard was known for his satirical and erotic comics (the latter featuring his heroine Paulette) as well as his magazine illustrations and covers. He often worked with writer Jacques Lob, and their psychedelic adaptation of Ulysses was published in the January 1978 issue of Heavy Metal. These are interstitial illustrations from that story. . Today, we look at Snowpiercer, as discussed by Ganzeer.

Another example of a very powerful comic book butchered by Hollywood is SNOWPIERCER by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette, first published by French publisher Casterman in 1984 as TRANSPERCENEIGE. Unlike the action-oriented Hollywood adaptation, the original story is quite philosophical and very dialogue driven. It imagines a frozen globe cursed by an eternal winter, where what’s left of the entire human race inhabits a train that never stops, a train that is 1,001 carriages long. The elite inhabit the carriages up front, and the lower classes are left with little to no services in the carriages at the far rear.

The story centers around Proloff, a refugee from the tail, who in an attempt to break free, is caught by guards who are ordered to bring him up front for interrogation. And so he is escorted by guards on a very revealing journey through the entirety of the train.

While seemingly a simple story, it is actually one of the most powerful commentaries on the structures that govern the way we live today, which is an aspect the best science fiction stories can only hope to accomplish.
