Gender stuff

I dunno how this works but I’m gonna do my best! I’ve decided that no currently-existing label properly fits my relation to gender and my gender identity, so I made my own. Presenting: Jaegergender!

Jaegergender is named after the Jaegers, large mecha from the Pacific Rim movie franchise, although you don’t necessarily have to be a Jaeger or identify as one to be Jaegergender. Those who identify as jaegergender may identify with some or all of the following:

A strong parental instinct, or need to protect others around them, even at the cost of their own health

Identifying partially or entirely as robots of some sort (including traditional automatons, machines, computers, programs, mecha, Jaegers themselves, Transformers, androids, cyborgs, etc.)

Ambidextrousness or cross-dominance

A belief that they should be either unable to feel pain, or be dismantled painlessly

Difficulty speaking or selective mutism 

A distaste towards organic bodies and/or the maintenance they require

Feeling most at home when behind a screen or connected to the internet

Highly empathetic 

Being physically fast or mentally quick

Being patient or stubborn

Various forms of neurodiversity, including but not limited to autism, ADHD, and/or bipolar disorder

The Jaegergender flag:

Dark blue: empathy, connection to others/the environment/the internet

Light blue: the concept of being artificial, physical/mental speed

Light grey: being constructed of or related to metal

Dark grey: patience, stubbornness, and protectiveness  

Yellow and purple dots: change, polarity, and contradiction. This can include neurodiversity, the inherent contradiction of feeling artificial but being organic, or a general sense of unbelonging.

I use it/its pronouns, but those who identify as jaegergender could probably make a case for using any pronoun(s) under the sun.  Interaction is encouraged!! If you have questions or comments (either positive or negative) then please comment/ask/DM me. I’m very new to this so I’d love any input I can get!

Hi sanjuno, you had a fic idea for girl genius, what are your thoughts on the jagers? Do you have any headcannons or meta about them?

The Jaegerkin are hands down my favourite part of the Girl Genius setting.

They are monsters but they are loyal and their wholesome “brother and sisterhood” mentality is just so perfect. Sure, while serving the Old Heterodyne’s the Jaeger were nightmare fuel for a lot of Europa, but when you think about how the other end of the scale is how Bill and Barry neglected them and tried to replace them because the Boys were scared of or found the Jaegerkin distasteful…

I mean, can you imagine loving someone so much that you’d go into indefinite exile to search for them even though you know that they hate you and everything you stand for but it’s still a given that at least some of you would outlive the person you’re searching for so you go into exile anyway? It breaks my heart just to think about it. Twenty years of searching, and they still hadn’t given up.

Anyway the Jaeger are amazing and I think that they are exactly both who and what Agatha needs in her corner to succeed as the new Lady Heterodyne thanks.

i love my pilots so much, i couldnt protect yancy and it tears me up so much. if i had been stronger and better and not a failure of a jaeger i could have. i couldnt protect mako when she was a kid, but pentacost could. i love my pilots and i would do anything for them, but i wish i wasnt such a terrible jaeger. i know its just how they built me, but i still feel like its my fault. -- danger (please dont tag as g*psy danger)

help I accidentally an origin story for my Jaegerlady. Takes place in ~1762ish.

In Which Dana Leaves Home

(”I’ll Make A Man Out Of You” plays in the distance)

“Ion likes hyu. Vhen are hyu goink to marry him?”

“Dana, vhen I haff enough money, ve’ll be married, yah?”

“Look at hyu sister, already vit three fine sons! Vhen iz hyu leavink de house?”

She stood in her father’s stable, staring up at one of their plow horses. He was visible only as a darker shape in the dim pre-dawn light. She wasn’t a tall girl; she’d need a block to get onto his back. It would have been harder in skirts and stays. Not for the first time, she was grateful that her parents never threw anything away if it could be used later; her eldest brother’s clothes were too big on her, but they would make her job easier.

The saddle was old, and the leather creaked alarmingly as she heaved it into place. Part of her worried, but it was too early for even farmers to be awake. It took her three tries to get her leg over and settle onto the horse standing placidly as a table below her, and she wobbled once she was on. Her head felt too light without the weight of her hair, even with her father’s cap on, and the knife she’d slipped into a sheath at her belt knocked against her hip with each movement.

She knew her parents wouldn’t look for her. The Heterodynes had raided their town for generations; it was beyond their imaginations that any of their children would want to enter their seat of power, let alone join their cause. Especially a girl, she thought sourly, even a girl that wasn’t afraid to beat up the boys if they upset her. They thought she should be delicate and ladylike and weak.

By the time she got to the gates of Mechanicsburg, the sun had risen. It was uncomfortably warm, but she didn’t dare risk unbuttoning her coat yet. Even in oversized clothing some things were hard to hide. At least the army recruiting office wasn’t far, and if she steered between patches of shade it was almost pleasant.

She hitched her horse to the fence and strode in. Like her brothers, she walked as though she owned the place. “Who do I haff to talk to to fight for de Heterodynes?”

One of the men at the bench called over, “Step right up, boy!” As she ambled over to lean on the partition separating them, he looked her up and down appraisingly. She felt a tingle of nervousness until he said, “All four limbs, both eyes—ken hyu use dot knife?”

She nodded. “Und I haff mine own horse.”

“Goot, goot. Vot’s hyur name?”

She couldn’t help but smile, just a little. “Danila Vasilescu.”

honestly tbh one of the reasons I want to give Dana an art Spark for a boyfriend is just the sheer amount of time they’d both spend going “we are not dating we don’t even LIKE each other WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT,” arguing over painting technique/theory, and occasionally chucking paint water at each other when they get pissed.*

“Really, if you’d just use Hodge’s technique--” “I haff been paintink since before hyu vere born. Dun talk, iz a tricky part.”

“I ken see vot hyu iz tryink to do, bot really if hyu chust used forced perzpective instead ov--” “I KNOW WHAT I’M DOING.”

(extra bonus: boyfriend actually studied art in Paris. Dana is...a Jaeger.)
