Reposted from @dashikiinthecity What is #BlackAugust ? ❤️ Black August is a month long dedication of education,organization and reflection on legacies of Black revolutionaries,wherein which we rededicate our energy to the fight against white supremacy, colonialism, capitalism, and imperialism. We study, plan, and pledge to continue the Black liberation war. 🖤 This tradition originated in California prisons in the 1970's fueled by the assassination and persecution of members of the Soledad Brothers, the San Quentin 6 and other incarcerated Black men who sought freedom. One of the most prominent and vocal of these fallen imprisoned soldiers is George Jackson, a founding father of the Black Guerrilla Family. His fight was to the death and his death was felt beyond those in captivity and throughout Black communities within the US and abroad. Our reverence for these Freedom Fighters through studying,fasting, practices of self discipline and defense and reflection surpassed the prison gates and are now upheld by those who wish to keep the fire ignited and continue the fight for Black liberation. 💚 Over time organizers have discovered that August houses numerous other incidents of rebellions and key dates related to instances of Black resistance. Nat Turner’s Rebellion, Watts Rebellion, the Haitian Revolution and Gabriel Prosser’s Rebellion all took place in the month of August. The birth dates of Pan Afrikan leader Marcus Mosiah Garvey, author/activist James Baldwin and rapper/philanthropist Nipsey Hussle and other well respected Black icons and revolutionaries as well as the transition of whom we now recognize as collective Ancestors like activist/socialist/sociologist W.E.B.
