Friendship: 2. Does Shepard have a lot of friends?

Jane Shepard - Yes, she does! While some friendships took time to build and had their rocky moments, Jane has tried to keep the Normandy family in contact with each other. Despite the long distances and how everyone’s lives have diverged, she’s actually done a pretty damn good job. At least once a year, they like to get everyone together to share stories, let their kids play together, and just plain enjoy each other’s company. Aside from that, there are occasional visits to friends or long distance calls to chat.

Jaiden ‘ Jai’ Shepard - Jai actually doesn't have a whole lot of friends. She left the Alliance after Torfan and everyone involved in that mission sort of drifted apart because seeing each other was like a reminder of what they did. On Omega, she’s kept to herself for the most part, but has made friends with the clinic staff, which is Mordin, Daniel the other assistant doctor, and Ivelina, the asari nurse. She later became friends with Garrus (obviously) and Nihlus during the whole Nocturni storyline.

Jana Shepard - Jana was good friends with her crew in ME1 and ME2′s events, but after her husband died, she let those relationships stagnate and even sour in the case of Kaidan just before he died on Mars. However, being in Jon’s world has begun to help her heal and, as a result, she’s making friends with his crew. It’s slow and she fumbles a bit with the oddity of it being the same people, only different, but she’ll have plenty of friends during this war.

Romance: 29. What was their first impression of each other?

Jane Shepard - Jane was initially very wary of Garrus because he was a C-Sec officer. Because of her past, she didn’t have a very good rap with law enforcement and she was guarded around him, but there was something about him that had her opening up and even looking forward to talking with him. In a short time, she was letting her guard down around him and they eventually became good friends. He became her confidant before any kind of romance started and, in a way, that’s a kind of love in and of itself I think.

Jaiden ‘ Jai’ Shepard - Jai had a bit of a hero crush on Archangel before she met him and, when she finally did meet him, she was a bit intimidated, but also really awkward. She didn’t want to make her hero feel uncomfortable given his obvious need for secrecy, but she really began to love him as a person instead of an idol when he, instead of leaving, stayed with her and helped her through her PTSD breakdown. Hell, he even took off his helmet for her. She fell hard for him and he her, but neither knew it was love until Garrus was at his weakest and it was Jai who became the hero in helping him through his change.

Jana Shepard - This is a bit of a special circumstance because Jana was already in love with a Garrus before she met Atheling Garrus. However, when she first sees this Garrus, she’s stunned and actually admits that he may be the most beautiful thing she’s seen in this world so far. She later scolded herself for it because he isn’t her Garrus, but the immediate attraction was still there, even if it was influenced by her previous marriage. Later, though, she gets to see Atheling Garrus as a separate person from her husband and a true love develops.

Jana ‘Shepard’ Vakarian

🐢: Jane suffers quite a bit from PTSD, both from Akuze as well as the overall Reaper war. She heals somewhat from Akuze during Juxtaposed and is able to forgive herself for her survivor’s guilt, but it leaves her mentally vulnerable to what her future brings. Her death is a huge blow dealt and she hasn’t completely gotten over it. Add that to the hopelessness and loss during the war despite her best efforts and she still has nightmares of lost ones and being hunted by death.

💕 : Jane wouldn’t be who she is without Garrus. She never truly felt love before him or was treated like she was important enough that she’d ever be missed if something were to happen to her. She survived because she proved herself useful and able to work for a place in the universe, serving some duty to others, but Garrus provided her comfort and friendship without ever asking anything in return. He gave freely to her from the beginning and though she took some time to let her walls down, he’s become the one thing she’d been missing her entire life but never knew she deserved. He is love for her, plain and simple.

Jaiden ‘Jai’ Shepard

🐢 : Jai has been dealt a lot of pain in her life. She lost her family when she was just a teenager during the batarian attack on Mindor (and there’s a very dark story there that I haven’t touched yet). Alone, she had no other idea of what she wanted to do with her life than to join the Alliance that found her, saved her from the graveyard of her former life, and became the one thing she thought she could do that would help give her a strength she didn’t have during that attack. She doesn’t like feeling helpless and getting into the Alliance and becoming a medic helps her feel like she has a place in the universe and a chance to help others. That didn’t completely relieve the pain, though, and she is ashamed to admit that she reveled in her actions during the attack on Torfan. It was only after she realized just what she’d done, the innocent people that died as she stood by, that she lost all strength her few years in the Alliance gave her. She had become her own monsters and it left her scarred. She suffers from her own PTSD from her childhood that resurfaced after Torfan. She hopes that helping people on Omega without expecting something in return will help heal that guilt she has.

💕 : She had a bit of a hero crush on Garrus when she only knew Archangel. He helped people, worked to make Omega a better place, and she felt like he was making a bigger impact than she and Mordin’s little clinic could do. She only healed people, but Archangel gave them a will to fight and a chance at climbing out from under the oppression of mercs and gangs. When she finally met Garrus in person, he put his identity at risk by removing his helmet to soothe her when she had a breakdown in the streets. He became a new kind of hero to her, one that was more of a hero looking out for her as an individual than a nameless face in the masses. It came naturally to help him in any way she could when he literally collapsed at her feet and she began to see that her hero was just a turian man, one with his own emotions and his own pain, and she began to love him not just for his strength he’s shown her, but his weaknesses as well.

Jana Shepard

🐢 : Jana has a lot of conflicting feelings concerning Garrus in both realities. She loved her husband, no doubt, but she’s ashamed by her instant attraction to this new, seemingly freer version of him. She came from such a dark place in her universe, that it’s a kind of shock seeing someone who doesn’t need her in order to heal a set of scars and mental pain that she felt somewhat responsible for. Atheling Garrus doesn’t carry the results of her reality’s Garrus’ desperation to be useful, to be like her after her death. She realizes that it seems the loss of Jon didn’t hit Garrus as hard as her death did her Garrus and it makes him seem like a different person. He may look like, act similar to, have the same name, and share some quirks, but she soon begins to see that Atheling Garrus is a whole different person. He isn’t her husband, but, then again, is that really who she needs?

💕 : I’ll say it right now that, despite my intent on keeping Jana’s reality mostly canon, I am not saying canon Shakarian is quite the same as her relationship with her husband. Her Garrus, to say it simply, needed her to be strong in a way that wasn’t going to be healthy for herself. Jana was ignoring her own self-care after being brought back and finding her universe so different after a lost two years because she was tending to her Garrus’ scars and mental issues from Omega. He was broken, plain and simple, and though her revival had helped, he was still in a place where she was wearing thin trying to keep them both afloat. For instance, the hunt for Sidonis and how Garrus acted really showed her that the Garrus she knew was still hidden beneath pain and anger. Even when they married, it wasn’t completely gone.

With Atheling Garrus, though, there is no obligation for her to mend any pains or scars he has. In fact, he can be for her who she’s been for everyone else in the galaxy. And that’s exactly what she needs, but that scares her. This huge difference in Garruses has her reeling and it’s part of why she starts to become close to him before even realizing it. It’s then, though, that she stops herself, guilt washing over her of seeming to get over her husband’s death so quickly. It takes her some time, but she’ll eventually see that it’s okay to love someone who doesn’t need her to be their strength and that she isn’t betraying her husband because she ultimately wants that in a lover, wants that stability and shoulder to finally carry her weight. She’ll always love her husband, but she can also love Atheling Garrus.

I think this is for the OTP Asks, so I’ll use that list if it’s okay, anon :)

6. What is the favorite feature of their partner’s?

Garrus

Garrus loves that Jai’s an albino. He loves the white of her skin and hair, even the light blue of her eyes because it’s like she’s a beacon of light in the dirty, dark Omega. He feels a sense of peace with her and it’s almost like her love is cleansing.

Nihlus

Nihlus loves how strong Ashley is. He’s no masochist, but he gets so hot and bothered at the fact that Ash could easily run with heavy armor and full set of weapons. She’s got the muscle and he loves it.

8. Nicknames? And if so, how did they originate?

Garrus

I admit that I’m really bad at nicknames because I don’t really use them in my daily life. Because of that, I’m not sure he’d really have one for Jai.

Nihlus

Same as above, but he’s been known to call Ash ‘Love.’

14. Who kisses the hardest?

Garrus

Garrus is afraid of being too forceful with Jai, but his size does make his kisses stronger. However, Jai is the one to usually put extra effort into her kisses because she adores him so much.

Nihlus

They both kiss about the same, but sometimes Ash will express emotion in her kisses. If she’s irritated (at anything), she shows it in her kiss. Kissing Nihlus helps to cool her down, but she does let a bit of her feelings show through. Most times it leads to more because it really turns Nihlus on, but there are some times where that’s not possible, so kissing is all they get. A bit of that frustration shows through too, actually.

26. What would be their theme song?

Garrus

I had to look through my stuff because, for some reason, whenever I’m asked for playlists or songs, I blank. I’m not going through my huge playlist, but I will glance through my most played stuff.
