Drabble: "Apology" (Jake and Steve)
apology (n). 1. An expression of remorse or regret for having said or done something that harmed another. 2. A formal justification, defense. “Hey, Dad,” Jake said. “While I’m away, rescuing Ax… you can clean out my old room.” “Finally! It’s a wreck.” Dad watched him slantwise. “What’s hidden in there?” “I kept diaries,” Jake said. “During the war. They’re hidden under the floorboards.” Which his parents’ Yeerks tore up when they searched his room, but they never found them. “The key is in Grandpa G’s footlocker.” A look of panic passed over Dad’s face. Fear at what he would find? Or did he know why Jake was letting him read them? “Maybe they’ll help you understand,” Jake said, and went on packing.

so, fandom, what's your favorite Jake quote?
It's what makes you so brave. It's what makes you so dangerous.
Character Study: Jake as 1w2
For the first round of #jakejam I did a personality analysis of Jake as an INTJ in the MBTI/JCF system, and for #marcopera I did an analysis of Marco as a 6w7 in the enneagram. For this round of #jakejam I'll delve into why Jake is a 1w2 in the enneagram.
The enneagram is a personality typing system based on your deepest-seated fears and insecurities. In many ways it highlights the dark sides of your character rather than the bright face you present to the world. The idea is that everyone is fundamentally missing something that they then seek out in their lives, which structures their personalities. Each Enneagram type has a different profound fear, and a different reaction to that fear.
What type Ones fear most is corruption, in the world around them and most of all, within themselves. They fear that they (and the world around them) will not live up to the ideal of how they should be. Ones have a lot of repressed anger, toward the parts of themselves they fear are corrupt and toward people and institutions that don't live up to their ideals. Yet at the same time, this very anger makes them even less like the people they would ideally like to be. If the traps that beset Sixes like Ax, Marco, and David are cynicism, excessive trust, and paranoia, then the traps that lie in wait for Ones are resentment and excessive criticism – especially toward themselves.
Jake is a great example of the Type One as superego. In Freudian theory, the superego adopts the rules of the Father (symbolically, the values and taboos of society) and imposes them on the ego and id, forcing the baser urges of the id into repression and sublimation. While Ones seek perfection in both themselves and the outside world, Jake is a very inward-facing One: he fights the Yeerks not because he sees them as corrupt and believes he can make them better, but because he would see it as a moral failing in himself if he didn't. Accordingly, he is extremely harsh on himself when he fails to live up to his idea of how a leader should behave. He leads the Animorphs by example – he doesn't need to boss them around a lot because he holds himself to such high standards that he expects the others to judge themselves the same way.
Enneagram types come with a wing: an ancillary fear that comes from one of the two types neighboring the main one, that gives a "flavor" to the main type. Jake is a 1w2, which means that he is also driven by a "need to be needed" – he likes to be in a position to help others directly and to be appreciated for that help. I think on some level it was profoundly important to Jake that throughout the war, the Animorphs knew how hard he worked to save Tom, even if Tom never knew until the end. He needed someone to appreciate all the sacrifices he made, in a way that Marco didn't when it came to his efforts to save his mom.
Other Type Ones in Animorphs: Alloran-Semitur-Corass
Drabble: "Bogeyman" (Jake & Jean)
His mother’s Yeerk refused to give her up. She thought she still had bargaining power, a hostage. Fool. Jake watched her starve with satisfaction, then horror as the fugue took hold, then numbness. The shriveled Yeerk falls from her ear. Mom’s first act as a free woman is to clutch Jake’s shirt and stare at him, wide-eyed. “She was so afraid of you,” she whispers. “They all were. My little Jake, a bogeyman. What did you do?” Jake hugs her, and treasures this moment, when she doesn’t know to be afraid of him. Then, brokenly, he whispers why she should.
