Jake Writes Music - The Outs and Ins: A Study in the Ineffable

Over the past two years, I've been writing a piece entitled "The Outs and Ins: A Study in the Ineffable." It's a song cycle about the inability of words to define the human experience. The show is comprised of ten stand alone songs, which center around experiences that individuals have had in contrast to the labels that are used to define them. 

 Earlier this year, the show was produced at The University of Michigan for the first time. Here is a video from that performance. I wanted to give a huge thank you to my amazing cast, band, and creators. Without all of your help, we never would have been able to get the show to where it is now, and I never could have had the incredible and essential experience of seeing the work on its feet. A special thanks to Wilson Plonk, Peter Scatini, and Cole P. Abod for committing themselves to making this show the best version of itself. ShortOneGaming is officially back!

Hello everyone!  You’ve probably figured this out, since we’ve already posted a few episodes, but ShortOneGaming is officially off hiatus.  

I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of our supporters who have stuck by us during our “short” break.  We had to stop recording episodes mid-2016 due to a lot of major changes going on in our lives, but it’s your kind words of encouragement that got us back into the swing of things.  We’ve gotten the old crew back together, and you can expect episodes from Jake, Allison, and I - as well as other new and returning guests.  Similarly, look forward to both new and returning series - in addition to new games like Astebreed we should have new episodes of Dragon Age Origins and others on the way.

In conclusion, thank you!  We missed you!

Here it is at last!

On Friday, May 29, the Westminster Schools in Atlanta, GA hosted a staged reading of Like Dying Things Do, our new musical.  

This reading was rehearsed and staged over only a week’s time, and the amount of work, dedication, and passion that went into this performance is simply astonishing.

I’d like to say a big thank you to Kate Morgens for her direction, Michael Dauterman for his musical talent, and Nathaniel Gibson for his work making this recording possible.  I would also like to thank our AMAZING cast for working their butts off in order to make this reading the best it possibly could be.  So, thank you Brian Wittenberg, Juliana Freschi, and Owen Ladner!  You guys are amazing!

For those of you who watch the video, if you could fill out our survey at the end, it would be a huge help to us!  Also, the show starts properly at 4:44 in the video - everything before that is introduction from our director.

On May 30th at 6PM EST, we will be hosting a staged reading of Like Dying Things Do in Atlanta, GA.  Not only will this be a live, public reading of the show - with full musical performances of all of the songs - but we will also be recording and sharing the show online so that those of you who have followed our work can see the show even if you can’t make it to Georgia.

To celebrate the read through, we held a photo shoot over the weekend with the show’s cast.   In the reading, Juliana Freschi will be playing Ellanie, Sam Lauten will be playing Flynn, and Jake Smith will be playing Adam. 

A special thanks to Spencer Stephens for standing in as Rose during the shoot.  While Spencer will not be acting as Rose during the read through, he has provided Rose’s vocals for all of our song recordings.  He is a truly remarkable actor and dear friend - Thank you for your help!

It’s been a long time, folks.

For the better part of the past year, we have been working away at our new, original musical, Like Dying Things Do.  We’ve spoken about this project in the past, but in all of our previous updates, we were talking about a work-in-progress – a show that might one day get made.

I’m happy to say that Like Dying Things Do is well out of the theoretical stage.  We finished the first draft of the script back in November, and since then, we have been working to clean the show up and get it performance ready.

In May, we will have our first live performance of the show.  We will be hosting a staged read-through, and we plan to record that performance and share it with all of you.  Past that, we are currently in discussions with a theater in Atlanta, along with several members of the theatrical community, and we hope to have a full performance of Like Dying Things Do booked by the end of the year.
