❝ I just need a little TEENY TINY nap and then I’ll-... ❞ James trailed off, slipping into sleep a little already as he leaned further into Kai only to jolt awake at the sound of his own light snore.

It may not be what Keith wanted to see, but the question had James’ lips turning down in a frown as he seriously had to contemplate how he wanted to answer. Things between them have changed A LOT over their time as cadets, hostility making way for a more healthy rivalry, friendship, AND MAYBE SOMETHING MORE... but James was still the kind of guy who really hated risking getting into trouble.

Keith was something special- SOMETHING WILD, unable to be tamed by something as simple as a rulebook. If something wasn’t to his standards he didn’t bother with it and the simple fact of the matter was that Keith was already a better pilot with better judgement than almost anyone in the Garrison. It was inevitable that James would be drawn to him and subsequently drawn into his SCHEMES like sneaking out past curfew to stargaze out in the desert.

But in the end the answer would always be the same. It didn’t matter how James tried to reason it all out in his head because THERE WAS ONLY ONE TRUTH TO BE TOLD HERE.

No, of course James had not been POUTING at Keith for the last ten minutes as the new year countdown was getting closer. He hadn’t been pouting because he had NOTHING to pout about- nope. He’s not currently annoyed in his tipsy state that Keith is a half inch taller than him and thinking about how when he gets his kiss he’s gonna have to tilt his head up JUST SLIGHTLY so that their lips could meet.

Because that would be ridiculous and JAMES IS NOT A JEALOUS PERSON.

❝ Shut up, Keith. ❞ He hadn’t said anything, but James could FEEL IT as he’d looped his arms around his boyfriend in preparation for the moment. Keith knew him too well and ( with James’ working semi-drunk theory that being an alien DEFINITELY gave Keith some kind of inhuman abilities because who is that good at everything they try without being some kind of superhuman??) could no doubt read right into his thoughts like he had some kind of JEDI MIND TRICKS.

Well he’d show him. Keith wasn’t the only cool guy who could surprise everyone here. He’s JAMES GRIFFIN, a kick-ass fighter pilot and one of the youngest lieutenants in the Galaxy Garrison. He could do anything he set his mind to, even sweep that dumb, cool, UNFAIRLY HOT loser Keith right off his feet.

And as the countdown started and everyone was getting down to the 3... 2... 1... he did just that. No tilting his head up tonight, no sir. James pulled on his stupidly pretty and deceptively muscular boyfriend and swept him right into a dip kiss.

❝ Keith... ❞ Shoulders slumped as James let out a deep sigh. This wasn’t unexpected behavior from Keith, NOT AT ALL, but these stubbornness issues were not always something James had the energy to deal with. It was late at night and they should both be asleep right now because IT WAS WAY PAST LIGHTS OUT, but here they were instead.

❝ Well you’re not dying on my watch, not unless I’M THE ONE THAT KILLS YOU for never listening to me when I tell you to get your reckless self to bed. I only came out here to look for you and you’re gonna get me in trouble... again. ❞

❝ For PLOT REASONS mostly, but I think we both know some people can just be that stupid in real life. ❞ But as much as James just wanted to admit these movies were RIDICULOUS AND PREDICTABLE, he really hadn’t looked up too much from where his face was buried in Keith’s shoulder to avoid the jumpscares any time the music got too tense.

Not that he’d ever verbally admit he was doing this despite having ZERO way to deny it.

When his helmet went missing from his room, James knew WITHOUT A DOUBT where to look for it. There was only one being on this base determined to irritate him at every turn and make his life harder, and the pilot was looking RIGHT AT HIM, glare settled firmly on the dragon.

James just watched, unamused with his brow quirked slightly in question. Keith may have never quite been the troublemaking delinquent some claimed but he DID have a history of being kind of a BRAT sometimes. ❝ See at this point you’re just being THE ANNOYING KIND OF LAZY because the other charging cable is literally THREE STEPS to your right next to my desk. The room isn’t big, Keith. ❞
