george york and james latham
18-year-old George York and 19-year-old James Latham were both privates in the U.S. Army in 1959 when they met while at Fort Hood, Texas. They quickly bonded over their desire for violence. This shared desire led them coast to coast and left behind a trail of robbery and murder. In May of 1959 they left Fort Hood and made their way to York’s home town, Jacksonville, Florida, where they strangled two women and stole their car. On 7 June, they shot and killed an elderly man, John Wittaker, in Tulahoma, Tennessee and stole his car. They then drove to Edwardsville, Illinois, where they killed 35-year-old Albert Reed before looting a service station and killing the attendant, Martin Drenovac. A few days later, the murderous duo killed Otto Ziegler in Kansas and picked up 18-year-old Rachel Moyer in Colorado before murdering her in their stolen car. They were apprehended on 10 June and bragged about killing eight people - their gun had eight notches scratched on the handle but only seven victims were discovered. They were sentenced to death, to which they responded: “We killed together, so we expect to die together.” Their wish was granted two years later when they were hanged on 19 December, 1962.
