Director James Mottern preps for Woods Hole Film Festival

  Director James Mottern is still in the thick of editing his Boston crime thriller “God Only Knows,” but tells us he’s working as fast as he can to get a clip ready for the Woods Hole Film Festival next week. Mottern, a Providence native who lived in Massachusetts for years, will lead a master class about directing on Thursday. In 2009, he was in Woods Hole to show his drama “Trucker” with actress Michelle Monaghan; this latest project, which he filmed around town last winter, stars Harvey Keitel, Ben Barnes, Stoughton’s Kenny Wormald, Leighton Meester, and Boston’s own Slaine. Mottern tells us he shot much of the movie in Rhode Island, but that his North End scenes are the real deal. “It’s not easy to shoot there but it’s a great-looking place,” he said by phone Thursday. Mottern praised his local cast, particularly Slaine, a rapper-actor who’s appeared in some of Ben Affleck’s Boston hits. Mottern likened the crop of gritty actors coming out of Boston to New Yorkers like Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, who made it big in the ’70s. Mottern also confirmed that he’ll start filming another movie in New England next spring — something with sci-fi influences that he compares to “District 9.” The Woods Hole Film Festival kicks off on Saturday with screenings of Matt Birman’s “A Fish Story,” “The Golden Scallop,” which was filmed on the Cape and featuresJames Cosmo of “Game of Thrones,” and “Birth of the Living Dead,” which is about “Night of the Living Dead”director George Romero. Randomly, Romero has a cameo in “A Fish Story” because Birman used to do stunt work for him.
