Moonlighter

Moonlighter takes the standard dungeon-crawling experience - delving into the depths for loot, then emerging to toss the junk at merchants and dive back in for better gear - and creatively flips it on its head, putting you in charge of the town’s store and having you stock it with the items you retrieve. It’s a genius idea that encourages you to think carefully about what you want to bring back with you.

You control the prices, the stock and the decor of your store, all of which affect customer satisfaction and alter the amount of coins you’ll be raking in. That money can be spent on weapon upgrades, furniture and more, giving you plenty of freedom in how you want to approach the game - do you want to push down as far as you can with the barest equipment to start selling valuable things quickly, or take multiple shorter trips to build up your arsenal before you take on the trickier bosses?

The bosses really are challenging too. Dodging and attacking controls well, but will be tricky to master for most players. Luckily, whilst the achievements for crafting items and buying improvements have uneven gamerscore values, the hardest set, given for beating each of the bosses without being hit once, are worth a nice round 30g each, so you won’t be stuck with odd numbers on your tag forever if you aren’t up to the task. Still, the full completion here is a brutal undertaking, but if you’re looking for a game to dedicate some real hours to, Moonlighter could be your perfect pick.

Pros:

• Satisfying combat controls

• You get loads of control over the commerce side of things

• Such a unique and charming concept

Cons:

• Some achievements are almost sarcastically hard

• Speedrun achievement really discourages you from enjoying the beautiful environments, which is a shame
