Immersing herself in responsibility and constantly moving forward was a distraction; a way to avoid reckoning with the destruction of Lux Aurea and her sister’s death. It had worked so far, but it could not hold out for much longer. Sooner or later, the metaphorical dam would break and everything that Janai had suppressed would come pouring out. She needed some time and space to reckon with it, and soon, or she’d collapse inwards around herself.  Amaya wanted to make that time and space for her, where she could begin to process all of that, as just Janai and not Queen Janai.

listen guys, it's not realistic to have janai know sign language after a few days. sign language is a language like any other, it takes years to learn, to climb levels of fluency. she could know a few signs in a few days. and if she started to learn for real and with amaya's help I'm sure they could have an actual conversation in a few months. but the fluency that it would take for intimate and complex conversations? years.

so it's given to us in a plate the slow burn potential of learning how to express herself better and better over the years. it's easy to sign to Amaya 'I love you' but what about 'the honor you've shown in the battlefield and the way it stretches to every part of your life fascinates me. the fearless way you talked to me even though you knew my royal status was a badass move. I saw myself in you, we fight for things bigger than us. I didn't need the light to know you had a pure heart. '
