2004 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is as good as you you think it would be. Pure black cherry, tar, licorice and dried herbs. Needs quite a bit of air at age 14, so no need to rush on this one. Plush texture and long finish. 2003 Château Beausejour Duffau and 2004 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin to celebrate with our good friends Kiko and Ron on Saturday night. Both wines are just beginning to show well and have room for improvement. The Beau is a very typical example of the old school style of Beausejour before the recent change in the winemaking team. Shockingly high acidity given the ultra hot vintage and everything is in perfect balance. Amazing how they were able to make a wine with this much freshness. One that can and will continue to develop for years and even decades. The Janasse was the real star in my opinion. This is the old vines cuvee of theirs and it blew me away. Kirsch liqueur, sweet cigar tobacco and spices galore. But despite all that dark fruit, there was pretty acidity balancing things perfectly. So I had every intention of posting a #tbt today, but fortunately life intervened! We opened a 2008 #guigal #lamouline and then the floodgates opened! The 2013 Bond St Eden would have been wine of the night most nights, but tonight even the supposedly off vintage 2008 La Mouline was hauntingly good. So good that we had to open a second bottle, which was somehow even better than the first. Subtle pepper notes combined with smoked meat and pleasant barnyard aromas won us over before the first sip. The La Mouline attacked our palates with plush red fruit, soft tannins and a finish that seemingly went on forever. The 2013 Bond St. Eden was outstanding and would have been the standout most nights, but not tonight.
