2004 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is as good as you you think it would be. Pure black cherry, tar, licorice and dried herbs. Needs quite a bit of air at age 14, so no need to rush on this one. Plush texture and long finish. 2004 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Prestige is as people say "the good stuff". Raspberry and plum with black cherry in terms of fruit. Provencal herbs, pastille and earthiness on the palate, too. Finishes very strong and maintains plenty of freshness and balance throughout. The 2011 Domaine Pegau Cuvée Reserve was the best of the diverse lineup of red wines from #chateauneufdupape. From an early drinking vintage, this bottle was firing on all cylinders - explosive aromatics of peppery plums and garrigue (sage, rosemary, thyme as shown in second picture). The palate was consistent with the nose, but was even more savory with iron and hints of Tabasco. The tannins were soft and fully integrated. The Cuvée Reserve is 80% Grenache and rounded out with 13 other Rhône varietals. The vines are grown in rocky soil (pic 3) and aged for two years on large oak barrels (pic 4). This wine is a tremendous value and underscored why #domainepegau is one of my favorite producers. The 2012 Vieux Telegraph La Crau had a fantastic nose, but fierce, gripping tannins and needs at least 5 more years. Hard to believe the VT was only 1 year younger than the Pegau. After the overpowering barnyard nose blew off, the 1998 Gardine rounded into a very nice example of CDP from an excellent vintage. 2005 Domaine Roger Perrin Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve des Vieilles Vignes is still such a puppy. From what I can tell, this is normally a 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre blend from almost exclusively more than 100 year old vines. And that assemblage explains the wine's expression perfectly. It has this really deep and dark cherry fruit, orange peel, dried herbs and licorice palate that is incredibly intense but completely balanced. Nothing sticks out as being out of place or lacking harmony. On the finish, it has this really interesting salinity and dark chocolate note. Last night's lineup of reds with friends over. The 01 Branaire was fantastic wirh beautiful cherry, cigar box and graphite and plenty of time left before peak drinking. The 04 Raymond Usseglio was superb as well. One of the most savory and backward and traditional wines from CdP that I have been drinking recently. Not a hint of dried fruit or anything else suggestive of high degrees of ripeness. On the contrary...almost a "cool" CdP that operates entirely with freshness, savory and salty blackberry flavors and an imposing structure that required hours of air before showing its best. There was also a bottle of 03 Chapoutier St. Joseph Les Granits that was deeply flawed by poor wine making. Secondary fermentation in the bottle pushed wine through the cork while I was opening the bottle and the wine was an acidic, volatile mess. I have had more flawed bottles of Chapoutier than all my other Rhone producers combined in the last few years.
