Northanger Abbey was completed in 1803 as the first of Austen’s novels completed in full but was published posthumously in 1817 with Persuasion in four volumes written about 1798 or 1799 under the title Susan. In 1803 the manuscript of Susan was sold to the publisher Richard Crosby. 

It is divided into two sections Book I and Book II. The two Books differ significantly from each other in setting and in tone by degrees. Book I begins when the Allens who are family friends of the Morlands offer to take Catherine with them to the resort of Bath.

The story concerns Catherine Morland the naïve young protagonist and her journey to a better understanding of herself and of the world at her coming of age. Seventeen year old Catherine Morland is one of ten children of a country clergyman. 

Although a tomboy in her childhood she is in training for a heroine by the age of seventeen. She is excessively fond of reading Gothic novels among which Ann Radcliffe’s Mysteries of Udolpho is a favourite. 

Gothic fiction is called Gothic horror in the twentieth century as a genre of literature and film which covers horror, death and sometimes romance. It is said to derive from the English author Horace Walpole's novel The Castle of Otranto in 1764 later subtitled A Gothic Story
