October 1923
Gustav: “Antonija, from the moment you stumbled into my life—quite literally, I might add—I’ve felt something I can’t quite put into words. You bring color to my world, joy to my days, and light to every corner of this house. I’ve never been surer of anything in my life.”
[Antonija gasps, her hand covering her mouth, her eyes brimming with emotion.]
Antonija: “Gustav... I—”
Gustav: “Please, let me finish.”
[He chuckles softly, his nervousness evident but endearing.]
Gustav: “I know we haven’t known each other long, but I feel as though I’ve known you forever. You make me want to be a better man, someone worthy of your warmth, your strength, and your laughter. Antonija... would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”
[Antonija’s eyes widen, tears streaming down her cheeks. She nods before finding her voice.]
Antonija: “Oh, Gustav... Yes! Yes, of course, I will!”
[He slides the ring onto her finger, and they both laugh with relief and joy. Gustav rises to his feet, and Antonija throws her arms around him.]
Antonija (playfully): “You’re quite good at surprises, aren’t you?”
Gustav: “Only when the surprise is for the woman I love.”
April 1923
Antonija found herself utterly distracted, no matter how much she tried to focus on her needlework or the novel she'd picked up from the library. The intricate stitching she'd started that morning had gone astray, her hands trembling slightly each time she thought about Gustav. His warm smile and gentle manner replayed in her mind like the melody of a song she couldn’t shake.
She sat in the parlor of the boarding house, a cup of tea cooling beside her. Around her, the lively chatter of the other women seemed to swirl and fade, their voices muffled by her preoccupation. Antoinette was recounting a rather thrilling escapade from her previous evening, and the trio of friends—Ekaterina, Charlotte, and Gemma—giggled in unison at some shared jest. But Antonija’s mind was elsewhere.
She tried to reason with herself. It had only been a brief encounter, after all. He was kind and courteous, yes, but she knew nothing about him beyond his name and that inviting smile. Yet, something about the ease of their conversation and the warmth of his presence made her heart race in a way she hadn’t expected.
Her reflection in the mirror caught her eye. She leaned closer, adjusting the hat she’d carefully chosen for the day, trying to present an air of elegance that she wasn’t sure she truly felt. She sighed, turning away.
As the gramophone played softly in the background, she gave in to her thoughts. Perhaps she would see him again. And perhaps… just perhaps… she wouldn’t mind if she did.
August 1923
Antonija and Gustav’s time at his house is a clear progression in their relationship. After their evening together, Antonija finds herself in Gustav’s cozy home. His attention to detail is evident in every corner, from the tasteful decor to the warmth radiating from the fireplace. Gustav, seated at the dining table, pens a letter with thoughtful intent, possibly about her. His focus breaks as Antonija appears, dressed vibrantly in red and white. Without hesitation, their emotions overflow, leading to a tender and passionate kiss.
Later, as she rests peacefully, Gustav’s house becomes a sanctuary of comfort and connection, symbolizing a turning point for both their lives. The detailed setting, the furnishings, and their interactions echo the depth of their bond, blending romance with a comforting domesticity.

Antonija, surprised but pleased by Gustav's unexpected visit, accepted his invitation to go out. When they arrived at the speakeasy, the atmosphere buzzed with laughter, soft jazz, and the clinking of glasses. Antonija, dressed in a lovely teal dress and matching cloche hat, couldn't help but smile as Gustav confidently navigated them to a cozy corner of the bustling venue.
They began with a quiet conversation over drinks, Gustav sharing stories about his work and the city, while Antonija described her teaching experiences. The dimly lit room, with its warm mahogany furnishings and lively patrons, created an intimate setting for their budding connection.
As the night progressed, Gustav's humor and charm eased Antonija's usual hesitancy. She laughed more than she had in months, a sound that drew the approving glances of nearby patrons. Over a second glass of wine, Gustav leaned closer, his voice lower, sharing a personal anecdote about his family that hinted at his vulnerability.
By the time they decided to leave, Antonija felt lighter, her earlier apprehension replaced with anticipation. Walking her home, Gustav made no attempt to mask his interest, complimenting her wit and grace as they strolled through the city streets.
All of a sudden they found themselves at his house and they spent a joyous night together.
