Thoughts in a general but not totally chronological order after watching twice! **Spoilers below**
Absolutely loved this movie and Kit and Sophie's chemistry is 🔥🔥🔥
Where to even start? I loved that Jago just DGAF about anything but Anne, he is so in love and obsessed.
Morwen is so good and I feel like there are some sapphic vibes toward Anne? Like yeah she's her daughter-in-law and she has practical reasons for wanting Anne under her thumb but calling Anne her jewel, her angel, more precious than all the treasures in the world while stroking her hair and rubbing her back? The way she tells Jago "I would deny you the pleasure of her [Anne's] body" 👀 okay miss ma'am!
Can we blame Jago, Seamus, and Morwen for wanting Anne? She's a sweet lil' cinnamon roll, don't make her party to murder Morwen! The way Anne is horrified that she finds a children's toy on one of the men they kill. Morwen is like, "this is worth nothing!" not even picking up why Anne is horrified lol.
Jago just following Anne around everywhere with heart eyes is so sweet even though it's clearly supposed to be creepy too.
Poor Jon Jago, he gets jealous because he's a bastard parentless runt!
Was she trying to find you Jago or are you just taking every chance lol?
Jago coming in hot confidently asserting to Anne that she wants him, I'm here for it honestly. Meet him where they played as children? The Heart Tree?
Genuinely their scenes come across as so romantic I think it actually works against the plot a little, if Anne is supposed to be gaining independence from Jago and Morwen.
Jago telling Anne a romantic story on the beach about a man falling in love with a mermaid, meaning a woman who is part fish??? The kind of romantic tale Sansa would love???
Playing like they did as children???
Anne wants a baby, Jago! Get to work!
I would prefer steamier scenes of course, but they're just so good anyway.
Surprised Anne decided to leave Morwen and marry Jago... I know it's not actually gonna happen in the movie but still!
Jago going to church just for Anne even though he hates it iktr.
Tbh, Seamus being the knight was obvious but that's okay.
Jago, I was rooting for you and you can't even keep your "Seamus died" story straight! C'mon man!
"I've always loved you, Anne."
GAAH.
The crazy thing is Jago's not really a bad guy? I loved the way he noped right outta there when Seamus put the helmet on, he really didn't have a choice. He is by far the best for Anne out of him, Seamus, and Morwen.
Morwen and Seamus's brutality and greed matching each other. Conversely, Anne and Jago's respective horror at them both paralleling each other and showing Janne are actually a good match.
The helmet can't hurt Anne because she's pure of heart, aww. This is truly a story Sansa and Jon would both love.
Not cool to insult Anne, Jago! But hey, he's loved her his whole life since they were children and he had her and he lost her. I believe he is redeemable! Anne can fix him!
Pleasantly surprised that Jago is still alive at the end, I am choosing to believe Jago and Anne will get back together. After handling that helmet and Morwen, Anne will understand Jago better and he'll grovel at her feet and all will be well.
Does this go against the themes that Anne is supposed to be gaining independence? Yes, probably. But honestly the writing and themes are pretty thin, and the performances elevate this film. Jago and Anne were too happy together not to be together! So yes I headcanon they get back together and that's absolutely possible because they're both still alive!
Overall, not a great film but there are germs of a great film in there. The visuals are very nice. The Jonsa/Janne of it all is so worth whatever shortcomings. And the Janne resemblance to Jonsa (known each other from childhood, mother figure disapproving, Jago/Jon's jealousy and striving for what is perceived to be above their station, the romanticism) is definitely not a coincidence and goes beyond The War of the Roses setting.
Sophie and Kit wanted Jonsa and you can never convince me otherwise!
Would love to see them play lovers again with a happier ending, but if this is all we get it's still an amazing gift to us, Jonsa fam!
