However, there were frequent intrigues, encouraging Commodus to adopt an increasingly autocratic and cultish manner that grew into megalomania. By early 1900 the British were ready to strike back, evicting the Boers from Cape Colony and Natal, and invading and annexing the Orange Free State and South African Republic. Varus’ brutal methods antagonized many of the local tribes, who were persuaded to secretly unite under the leadership of Varus’ Germanic advisor Arminius.
