Killing someone was never something Kees had ever considered doing. He wasn't even sure if he had the ability to kill. But as he looked into Maria's determined eyes and thought about how the Don disrespected both her and her father, he nodded.

"Okay. But would it be okay if we managed to get rid of him permanently... without killing?"

Kees didn't like the idea of adding murder to his resume.

Margery leans back in her chair and folds her arms, raising an eyebrow at Maria.

I can see why you want to be rid of him, but are you certain that killing him is the way you want to do this? Taking a life is no small cost.  -📱

Maria straightens at that, fixing Margery with an intense look.

You think I'd be asking you this if I didn't know the cost? You think you can get one glimpse of my life and understand what I have been through? -🍇

She gets to her feet as she speaks, her voice growing louder with every word.

I know what it takes to weigh someone's life against your own, I know what it means to pay the ultimate price for your family. Don Vincenzio is rich enough to feed the entire village, but when we were starving he would give us nothing until we gave him something in return. And it is killing my Papa day by day to watch his son go and play with a man that would have let him die if it meant he got what he wanted. -🍇

Tears are falling down her face now, and she grips the back of a chair with both hands, her knuckles turning white against the wood.

I have been the one to keep this family together, over and over again. I have been the one to make choices my Papa could never make, I have been the one to sacrifice everything to try and keep what's left of our family alive. And all I have to show for it now is a father who can no longer look me in the eye and the lingering touches of a man who would steal my brother away from us just to fill whatever void is in his heart. So yes, I understand what I'm asking, I understand the cost. It's nothing I haven't already paid tenfold. I. Want. Him. Dead. -🍇

Maria leads the group through the vineyard to a small cottage beside a fig tree, only letting go of her brother's hand when they reach the door. She bends down and whispers something in the boy's ear and he hurries inside on his own. After a moment a shrill, delighted cry of "PAPA!" can be heard through the door, and Maria closes her eyes.

Right then. He's inside. I'm going to pass you all off as weary travelers in need of hospitality, alright? Do your best to look exhausted, especially you, old lady. -🍇

Margery glares at that, and lifts a hand as if to smack the girl upside the head, but Jasper catches it and shakes his head. She rolls her eyes, but lowers her hand and lets her posture slouch a bit.

Oh, woe is me, I am so old and tired and thirsty, won't someone give me a hand, yadda yadda. -📱

Good enough. Come in, then. And remember, not a word about magic until my papa leaves. -🍇

Maria leads them inside, and a middle aged man with his arm around Pinocchio's shoulder is there to greet them.

Come in, come in! Have a seat at the table here, and my daughter and I will get you something to drink!  -🪚

Kees' hands delicately caress any carvings as he passes, admiring the handiwork of them. When he does eventually sit at the table, he finds himself mesmerized by the intercate details carved in the wood. He can practically feel the woods texture come to life or promote some level of magic from it just from the intention and the carving.

"I... the wood feels so alive."

He looks to Margery and the other boys, simply in awe of the handiwork.

Kees looks in awe at the garden he was led to. Being the last one to exit the house, he couldn't help but feel like that one girl in the old American movie that didn't start in color and then looked in awe when she saw color.

He looked to Margery and pointed at some sticks on the ground.

"Do I need a wand? Or staff? Or is that a stereotype?"

He looked curiously at the trees, it felt like the wood back here was special, somehow. The sticks even felt different somehow.

Margery chuckles at his words, and shakes her head.

Do witches need wands, or staffs or crystal balls or cauldrons or anything? No, not at all. Jasper dear, you've an affinity for fire, yes? Why don't you demonstrate? -📱

Margery points to a tree stump jutting out of the ground in one corner of the garden, and Jasper nods. He lifts his arm snaps his fingers, a ball of fire flaring to life in the palm of his hand. He holds the fire out, then with a pushing motion, sends the flames flying towards the stump. The old dry wood ignites in an instant, and Margery smiles as it burns.

Magic is an energy force, and it's all around us. It's concentrated highly in the astral plane, a dimension separate from the one we currently occupy, and naturally born witches have a special connection to it and to magic itself. Now, some do still choose to use objects of power. Jasper's grandmother used a crystal ball to get a clearer picture of the future, the Sisters of Slough have a fondness for enchanting ingredients, and the picture of witches with wands and brooms or wizards with staffs didn't come from nowhere. However, most people who use wands and staffs specifically probably either are witches who are weaker, or aren't witches at all. -📱

So...does that mean you don't need to be a witch to cast spells? -🌩️

Exactly. A Witch is a kind of person, with a connection to magic. But the average human doesn't need this connection in order to cast spells, and the astral plane isn't even the only source of supernatural power in this world. -📱

She waves her hand at Frankie as she speaks, and a pair of large angels wings become visible sticking out of his back.

Frankie here, for instance, isn't a natural born witch. His grandmother was on close personal terms with a divine being, and so his power doesn't come from magic or the astral plane at all, it comes from the big man himself. He could learn to cast spells using magic, but it wouldn't come as naturally as his holy gifts. -📱

So what does that make me, exactly? I'm not a witch or an angel, all I can do is see ghosts. -🌩️

Is that thing you did where you shot lightning not magic? It looked an awful lot like it. -🚗

Margery shakes her head again.

No, THAT is because Jim was possessing him. Jim spent years as a ghost with unfinished business, so when he possesses a willing host, he's able to imbue them with power from the astral plane itself. It helps that said host was Junior, who happened to be a medium. The results may not have been as strong with a normal human. -📱

But what does all this mean for Kees? -✨

Well, first we have to find out what his affinity is. Every witch has one, and even those who seek out alternative forms of spellcasting tend to have something they're pretty damn good at. Once we know that affinity, it's quite possible that he would need a wand or something like that. They make it easier for the weak to channel the power intentionally. -📱

Julian looks over at Kees, tilting his head a bit.

Are you doing okay? This can be a lot to take in all at once, I know that I had a horrible time when I first found out that demons and angels and magic were all real. -🚗

When Jasper opens his eyes he experts to find Wilhelm, but instead sees Ethel in front of him. Unlike the last time he saw her she's not smiling, but has a serious cold face.

Jasper looks around, as if expecting to see Wilhelm standing just off to the side, but he is alone with Ethel in a dark void that appears to have no beginning or end.
