#096 Until The Ball Doesn’t Drop

PREMISE: Jay Carver is an ex-cop with just one mission: To stop the Times Square Ball from dropping on New Year's Eve. While the rest of the world stands by and cheers, Carver is the only one who wonders: Does that big glittering Ball want to be dropped? Every year he does everything he can to keep the Ball from reaching the bottom of the pole. And every year he fails. CHARACTERS: Jay Carver is routinely dismissed as delusional for his belief that dropping the Ball constitutes a crime. Every year the Ball is hoisted up to the top of a building against its will and is dropped, which in Carver’s mind, constitutes assault at the very least. Carver lost his job and his family because of his obsession, and now he won’t let anything get in the way of his mission.          Charlie “Chaz” Henkle is the technician in charge of lowering the ball. He has no opinion on whether or not the Ball should drop. For him, it’s just a paycheck, but for Carver, it’s personal. Every year, Henkle is harassed by Carver and has to change his phone number, email, and wear a variety of wigs and disguises in order to fulfill his duty. To duck Carver, Henkle lives in hotels and it’s been years since he’s been able to stay in one place for more than a few days. Once, Henkle stayed in the same motel for two weeks, and Carver started mailing him pictures of the Ball with phrases like “You Let Me Drop” and “I Fell On Your Watch” scrawled on them in blood. (S02.E15 “Who Watches The Ball Droppers?”)          The Times Square Ball is a 1200 pound ball, six feet in diameter, built by Waterford Crystal. NOTABLE EPISODE: One of Carver’s wackier plans for keeping the Ball from dropping involved rigging a gigantic magnet to a helicopter so that he could fly over Time Square and scoop up the Ball. The plan foiled itself when the magnet prevented the helicopter from being able to take off (S01.E17 -- “Stay In The Sky With Me”). CATCHPHRASE: “Nobody thinks about THE BALL!” / “What if it gets broken?” TRIVIA/MISCELLANY: The show was based on a true story.
