Notes from Jay Gruden’s Press Conference (October 7, 2020)

Coach Gruden says that the team wants to keep the lead longer so that James Robinson can get more touches. When asked about James Robinson’s improvements during the season, Gruden said that Robinson’s vision, runs after contact, and ability to make men miss in the hole is why he is so effective. They want to get the RB more touches in space. 

When asked about the Bill O’Brien firing, Gruden said that getting fired early is both jarring and something that you have to accept as a part of the NFL. Houston had a very tough schedule and he empathizes with Bill O’Brien. 

Jay Gruden has seen a lot of growth from WR Laviska Shenault. He speculates that the WR may be even better once he is fully recovered from the double core surgery that he had in college. He took the wideout out of the running game because of James Robinson’s performances in recent weeks.

Gruden says that the offense needs to do a better job of overcoming negative plays and focusing on moving forward and getting the chains moving. The offense’s playbook usually has a lot of options that allow the team to adjust to different situations. The offense needs more production, to win against man-to-man, to achieve a variety of other goals.

The missed 2 point conversion’s play design had four routes that were in the end zone, but Gardner Minshew decided to check the ball down to James Robinson. 

The Texans’ CB Roby, LB Mercilus, and the rest of their veteran LB core are some names Gruden mentioned specifically. 

The offense stayed with the run as long as they could against the Bengals but the scoreboard dictated where the offense needed to go at the end of the day. Gruden eventually wants to get James Robinson the ball 20 to 25 times a game (Thank God), but the team’s ability to get keep games close is going to influence playcalling. 

Carlos Dunlap got into Gardner Minshew’s throwing lanes and that influenced his bad plays just as much as a good pass rush. Everyone will need to make a jump during the next part of the season, though - not just Gardner Minshew. The team’s 1-3 record reflects the QB’s play to outsiders; but Minshew has the tools to get better during the middle of the season.

The biggest takeaway from this presser is that Jay Gruden recognizes what he has in James Robinson. It’s not so much that the coach doesn’t want to run him; instead, he doesn’t want the team to get too behind in games because of long run-based drives that don’t score quickly enough. This is a valid concern, but the Jaguars’ defense is horrible this year. With Gardner Minshew being more prone to interceptions the past few weeks, Jay Gruden needs to control the ball and help his defense get some rest and good field positioning. Logan Cooke hasn’t had a great season so far and part of that is where he is always punting from. Going three and out while taking no time off the clock doesn’t score any points, so having some long, clock burning drives that at least give the defense a rest is better than nothing. I’m not saying that the Jaguars need to turn into the Rex Ryan-era Jets, but this defense cannot be relied upon to get clutch stops.
