I was wondering if there’s an Au out there in which a younger Jayce meets an already existing Machine Herald. Disgraced and tossed from the university, Jayce struggles to keep his family business afloat while Piltover seems determined to punch down.
Till a man in a hood enters his forge, having heard of a talented pair of hands dispute the blackened name.
Over time Viktor returns with more and more work for the young forger… trust building the more they explore their works.
——something like that.

“Perhaps it is time,” Mel started. “For the era of magic.”
“Uhh, Hextech,” Jayce cut in. Polite yet assertive to command attention, though his current state in defying gravity already did an excellent job doing so. “For the era of Hextech.”
The blue reactionary light from the small gemstone centered between Jayce and Viktor; its influence expanding about the lab in the way of a soft glow. Amidst all the chaos: the chaos of the floating books, whatever furniture was not fixed to the floor, and the stormy swirl of befuddlement of Professor Heimerdinger and the two security guards flanking him, there was a sense of peace.
The light cast over Mel’s features remarkably. Serenely. Heavenly, even. Though the speckles of light that danced about the room still rivaled the gold flecks laid on her cheeks.
Light drawn to light, Mel decided to take a half step forward. Then another more careful one watching Jayce start to swim down from the high arched ceilings closer to her.
Heimerdinger’s squabbling at the boys fizzled out on his lips.
“The era of Hextech,” Mel agreed. In the quiet that has settled over the others in the room, she lifted one of her hands out with regality, curious of the aura that has positively captured the two scientists. A palm outstretched as if the light’s sphere was something tangible to coast.
Closer to meeting Mel eye to eye, Jayce extended one of his hands towards her. A silent offering she accepted sweetly before she, too, was enveloped in the Hextech gemstone’s charged sphere of influence.
The reactionary force from the floor calmly diminished underneath her to nothingness. All the while Jayce studied the faintest of expressions written over her features before ultimately pulling her in towards his center.
Mel was not afraid, her trust wholly in him and his arms holding her close. There is an undercurrent of excitement of the promise this Hextech has for them and Piltover as a whole. And another as well, a soft whisper toying at the space between the two, inconsequential to the scientific discovery.
Jayce
Jayce
Jayce!
“Ah!” The all purpose wrench in his hand danced out of his grip clumsily before he managed to reaffirm control of his limbs and hold onto the tool a little tighter. A swear hisses past his teeth.
“You are unfocused, Jayce.” Viktor calmly ascertained.
Gravity’s influence on Jayce was in check and still active. The hard and cold hold of the wrench, a jarring contrast to the warmth of Mel’s hand that felt so real to him not a second ago. “Um, yeah, I guess so.” Jayce muttered an apology before a shake of his head, waking up his senses. His attention returned back to the work spread out before him on the lab bench, the flow diagrams, blueprints, and protocols not too far out of reach. A few tomes piled off in another corner. In that moment it was feeling more like a chore to tether his thoughts down to the task at hand.
“If there is something else calling your attention more, perhaps you may consider channeling whatever that is into something productive.” Viktor swiveled in his chair back to his own process diagrams he had been in the middle of finalizing.
He’s heard that one before. Nodding to himself, Jayce had to agree. He wasn’t sure what was going on in his head, it all felt… fuzzy. Confusing. Not in a terrible way, however, in a way he wasn’t necessarily used to.
Maybe it could be rationalized down to this being one of the first check-ins he and Viktor will have with Mel as the sponsor of their research. With that came more than a little pressure. She’s already done so much putting her faith in him and their partnership was only going to get increasingly entwined. Well, ideally.
He wanted to wow her. To prove to both him and her that he’s worth it. Magic in the hands of the people could do multitudes of good. If harnessed correctly. Piltover can be cemented on the map with all of their names on it. Jayce found the idea positively entertaining. He and Viktor are scheduled to be meeting with Mel next week. She is a busy woman, the time they have for each other doesn’t overlap much. He couldn’t wait.
Maybe like Viktor advised, he could channel the excessive energy into something else as well in the meanwhile. Perhaps something of gratitude. Jayce’s fingers itched for something other than the tools and stones laid out before him and his mind began to stir.
The check-in meeting with Mel overall went splendidly. Jayce and Viktor were got a boost in their inspiration with finally honing in on a consistent method of minimizing the energy needed to stabilize the stones while maximize potential output. What looked like a small step what actually a significant achievement putting them closer in exploring the value range for the public when considering the potential inventions to come of Hextech.
Seeing the shine in Mel’s eyes burn a little brighter at their progress and next steps of HexTech’s utility, Jayce’s heart swelled in turn. As Mel thanked the men for their time and she was about to head to another meeting, she was stopped in her footsteps.
“Councilor Medarda!”
“Hm? What is it, Jayce?” His name on her tongue laid smooth as silk. “Is there something you need?”
An index finger raised to Mel. It told her, a moment please, before Jayce ran off to swipe something resting on a nearby tabletop and he was before her in a few long strides.
“Well, yes and no,” he started. His hands filled the space between them. Resting in them, a small box. “For you. Call it a way of thanks for taking a chance. And also”— turning to a more hushed tone as if a child finally spilling a well-kept secret— “a birthday present.”
Painted full lips dropped to a small ‘o’ tips of her front teeth poking out ever so adorably. Elegant eyebrows slightly lifted. “How did you know?” The moment the question left her lips did her face solidify in realization.
Elora.
Jayce’s face ran the gamut of emotions in a matter of milliseconds, unable to settle on how he should feel or properly react. “Oh, gods, I… I hope I—” his thoughts scrambled. “I meant no offense!”
Mel blinked back to herself before carefully placing a hand on the trimmed breast pocket of Jayce’s waistcoat. Gold earrings reflected against the light as she shook her head. “No, you could never. The word is rather… surprised… anyone would do anything like this for me.”
Jayce started to relax under Mel’s affirmative words and touch. The tightness in his chest visibly unwinding.
“In a good way, I mean,” she clarified. “May I?”
Jayce’s hand overlaid hers for an affirming squeeze. “Of course, go ahead. And I am more than happy to oblige. You are worth it all, Councilor Medarda. If any little bit helps contribute to making your day brighter, I am glad I could help in such a way.”
“Mel, Jayce.” Her hand slipped out from the warmth sandwiched between his chest and his palm as trimmed nails carefully peeled away at the wrapping paper. “Please call me Mel.”
Jayce tipped his head, afraid his words would fail him watching her peek into his heart.
It was a jewelry box. A small one, approximately palm-sized for her to hold her hair accessories, rings or the like. Trimmed with sharp gold designs and richly colored sapphire gems. Mel’s expression melted serenely noticing the signature Talis touch. Delicate fingers ran over the box with reverence. “You made this? Thank you, Jayce.”
Stunned to silence exploring its intricacies in craftsmanship, the time got away from Mel terribly. Remembering herself, she had to excuse herself for another meeting. She was proud of the progress they made thus far, encouraging them to keep going. She looked forward to what they may come up with next.
Watching her shrinking figure turn the corner while cradling his gift in the palm of her hand, Jayce’s face froze, stunned by admiration and warmth.
A cough from Viktor still working on his piece on the opposite side of the room sounded very much like the word idiot. Jayce couldn’t be bothered to care. Viktor did say to channel his energies into a matter more productive. Reading the quiet smile that graced her lips back then, Jayce felt inclined to believe it could have been for something more real to them both.

Summary:
It happens every two to three days. When he finally feels his mind settle in a body that isn't his, it comes apart again. An unsettling sensation. Pang. His soul torn from his ribcage. Pang. Muscles cramping. Pang. Body frozen in time. Pang. All while he watches himself from the outside — or a version of himself.
It is a different version every single time. Days passing. Worlds, too. Not a single world his own. Not a single body either. It looks like him, sounds like him, too, but it is never him. His skin never feels like home.
Or: what if Jayce doesn't end up in one singular other universe but several? Constantly skipping from one universe to another until he finds himself in this specific one?
