Stanley Crouch: A Different Side

Stanley Crouch was an American original. Eugene Holley’s essay captures much of his personality and his accomplishments. Stanley could be irascible, but he was always looking for kindred spirits. He loved to talk and he loved to listen. In the early ‘70s, he was living and teaching in Southern California. He sent me tapes of the band that he was leading (as a drummer). That started a telephone relationship. We’d spent an hour on the phone twice a week, talking about anything and everything. We must have talked 100 hours before meeting each other face-to-face in LA in 1975 where I was working on the Blue Note vaults. He brought David Murray with him, and soon both of them would be welcome additions to the New York scene.

I gotta get out of the the music critic ghetto

I gotta get out of the music critic ghetto. The quality of writing you see by music journalists is so low anymore, it’s appalling. The Atlantic Monthly used to have the best music writing in the biz and now it’s mostly shit. It’s embarrassing and is just getting more so. I swear, writing well is a hindrance in the music journalism world, the editors are so bad they just drag down the whole thing.…

Finishing with one of Byrd's rap collabs, of course it's Guru but not 'Lounging' (the classic from his Jazzamatazz) but 'Time is Moving On' where respect is shown both ways between the musicians involved. 

Donald Byrd never stood still - reading his obits, some are still critical of the things that has made him a legend for so many people and only champion his early work. It's about time the bitching stopped and those in the minority join the rest of us and pay respect to the man and ALL the music he gave us.
