At the Jazz Kitchen in downtown Disney with family and friends, celebrating the wife's and my bday! We had such a blast!
CD release party of the new Wes Montgomery CD/LP “ In the Beginning” on Resonance Records held at the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis on May 11, 2015. Pictured are Zef Beldman, Resonance producer, Robert Montgomery, son of Wes Montgomery, and Dr. David Baker,Chair Emeritus, Department of Jazz Studies, Indiana University. An incredible night of music and stories. Dr. Baker told a story of when Wes Montgomery was playing in an all-white club in Indianapolis in the 50′s and Count Basie and Sarah Vaughn came to hear him. They were not allowed to enter the club, so Wes refused to play until they were admitted. They got in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zH3eOdcO7s&feature=youtu.be
I have never really been a reggae fan, but Song 9 makes me happy every time I hear it. The first time I ever heard it was at Open Mic night. I had this awful splitting headache and I didn't even want to be at Claude and Annie's that night. I can't remember why I was there. Anyhow, this fantastic local musician, Chris Oaks shows up... REALLY late in the evening because he had just gotten off from a gig at another location. Almost no one was left in the audience, but he and a friend of his go up onto the cramped little stage anyway and play for the handful of regulars that were still around. His companion had a mandolin, I believe. With just a mandolin, a guitar, and two voices, they start playing a simple but amazing rendition of this song and, miraculously, my headache disappeared! I go home immediately and listen to the original and fall in love with it!
The song takes on additional significance a few months later... Me and Jamie's "wedding" anniversary coincides with Bob Marley's birthday and he took me to the Jazz kitchen where they were celebrating it with reggae. Of course, they play this song during their tribute. The music was great, the food was great... it was an amazing night, but something was incredibly off even though no one would have known it. We were actually in the process of splitting up. I had already moved out 3 months prior, but he was still trying to win me back. He said I was very cold and distant that night. He told me later that this was the night he decided his efforts were all in vain and stopped waiting for me to change my mind.
I know it sounds so depressing, but I promise it's not. Sometimes you just grow apart. We had a good 13 years together (that night was our 7th year of marriage) and he's still my family and my friend. :)
