A GREAT DAY IN HARLEM
📷 by Art Kane
on August 12, 1958, Art Kane had the brilliant idea of photographing as many icons of the effervescent New York jazz scene as possible.
the picture was featured on Esquire's 1959 Golden Age of Jazz edition.
several legendary jazz musicians can be seen above, such as Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins, Count Basie, Mary Lou Williams, Gerry Mulligan, Lester Young, Oscar Pettiford, Benny Golson and others.
almost all of them are already, and unfortunately, gone. rest in peace to them all and long live the ones who are alive!
