Whumpril Day 7 - Ambush

Her only warning was the scuff of a boot against concrete.

Lilith wasn't unfamiliar with being attacked. She's over two hundred years old after all, so she's definitely met one or two coaches who hated her enough to try and wipe her off the map.

Normally, she'd turn into smoke and evade any attempts to grab her. But this time, she knew she was screwed the second she felt the stinging burn of a silver gauntlet. She was completely cut off from the flow and her magical abilities, meaning the only thing between her and the end of a wooden stake was her limited strength.

And she needed all the strength she could get, because one look at this masked stranger told her that there was no sweet-talking her way out of this one.

Ink, Talons and Swans AU

I decided to take my Soul Sacrifice AU and add the rest of the Beach, Summer and Vampires coaches into the mix. Now everyone else gets the chance to suffer too!

The premise of the AU:

When a coach is transformed into a Swan Soldier, they are completely stripped of their free will and individuality. Their personality is completely repressed and they’re left as little more than a husk that follows Night Swan’s orders at the wave of her hand.

Sometimes, Night Swan needs someone for their individuality, as there are several coaches she knows with traits and skills that would greatly benefit her. She wanted to find a way to control someone while still keeping what made them useful. For years, she practiced her magic and experimented with the dark flow until she discovered a new type of corruption spell.

With this spell, a coach is able to keep their free will, but in exchange they lose what makes them who they truly are. Their personality and core beliefs are contorted to suit Night Swan’s needs, so that they will follow her without question while still holding onto their strengths. What makes this spell so powerful is the fact that it feeds off of a coach’s insecurities and flaws. The bigger the insecurity, the deeper the curse digs it’s claws in.

This curse was still fairly new, however, and she needed to test it out before properly using it on Wanderlust, The Traveler, and everyone else she saw fit. She needed some guinea pigs to test on; ones that wouldn’t be much of a loss if the curse failed, but who would still be useful to her if it succeeded. Her search lead her to the Beach, Summer and Vampires coaches, and she gradually corrupted them and made them her Night Councillors.

They were eventually rescued by the Just Dancers after the events of JD 2023, and they all had to reconcile with what Night Swan did to them. They were especially not ready to welcome Jack Rose as a hero, as he was aware of their situation since day one and yet did nothing to help them.

When Jack’s friends got corrupted at the end of JD 2024, however, he had no choice but to seek out the BSV crew and ask for their help in defeating Night Swan once and for all. While they planned to free the Just Dancers, Jack would also have to do what he could to make it up to the people he had wronged.

Below the cut are the Night Councillors, how they got caught by Night Swan, their roles on the council, and how their personalities differ from their real selves.

Vester De Ville

Title: The Witness

Song: Give It to Me by Attica Riots

First member of the Night Council.

Night Swan came across him after hearing of his first-hand historical knowledge. He had travelled the Danceverses for 200 years and discovered monuments with deep connections to the flow that had since been destroyed and forgotten. She knew this knowledge would be useful to her, so she tracked him down and forcibly made him the first Night Councillor.

His curse feeds off of his fear of stagnation.

His role as a Night Councillor is to uncover powerful relics and forgotten monuments in order to take advantage of the abundance of natural flow.

Vester is normally casual, aloof, and sarcastic. The curse has made him unsettlingly formal and way too calm about the most horrific things. His love for Valentine turned into a dark obsession upon becoming The Witness. He sees him as the most perfect being in the Danceverses, someone who could rival Selios herself, and he never wants to let the man out of his sight. 

Valentine Moffat

Title: The Storyteller

Song: What’s My Name by Noshows

Second member of the Night Council.

The Witness tried to get Night Swan to allow Valentine on the council, insisting that he could be useful to her. Night Swan was hesitant at first, as she didn’t think there was anything he could give her that he couldn’t give as a regular Swan Soldier. She eventually relented after hearing of his breathtaking writing skills (she also decided that having Valentine around would help keep The Witness in line). One night, The Witness took a horrified Valentine from his home and brought him to Night Swan, who corrupted him and made him into The Storyteller.

His curse feeds off of his desperation to be remembered.

The Storyteller acts as Night Swan’s scribe. He documents her meetings, writes propaganda to paint her in the best light possible, and sometimes ghost writes for her son, Jack Rose. She tells him that once she brings about the era of perfection, he would be the one to write her into the history books.

Valentine is a bright, empathetic person who brings creativity into everything he does. The Storyteller, on the other hand, is stone-cold and antisocial, never speaking to others unless spoken to. He only writes what is needed of him, as creativity would only risk imperfection. 

Lilith De Ville

Title: The Huntress

Song: The Wolf by SIAMES

Third member of the Night Council

Lilith was unaware of what had happened to Vester and Valentine, as she was in Sun Horizon at the time. Upon her return to Eternyx (with an enthralled Alano in tow), she happened to run into Vester during a Jack Rose concert. She instantly knew that something was wrong, and the encounter ended with the both of them getting into a fight and her being arrested. Night Swan recognised her as The Maneater - the vampire stalking the Danceverses for a century and drawing in unsuspecting coaches to act as her thralls. The empress was impressed at Lilith’s ability to act for so long without being caught, and she forcibly recruited her as a new member of the Night Council.

Her curse feeds off of her fear of true intimacy.

The Huntress takes on the role of “recruiting” new coaches to Night Swan’s army. She scans the danceverses for anyone less likely to be noticed if they went missing, and she draws them away to be captured and turned into a Swan Soldier. Sometimes, she’ll stalk someone until they’re paranoid and scared of what will happen to them, all while they’re unaware that she’s herding them right where she needs them to be.

Lilith got her joy from being The Maneater by sweet-talking people into a false sense of security, enthralling them, and making them her servant until she’s bored before dumping them back on their danceverse. She likes the thrill of it (and it also distracts her from her fear of a true relationship, but that’s a story for another time), and her playful, confident personality makes it all the more easy for her. When she became The Huntress, the love of the hunt was increased tenfold. She became a lot more calculating, a lot more sadistic. She will often toy with her prey and push them to the edge of fear before finally taking them to Night Swan. That fear in a coaches eyes when they realise they’re cornered is the best part of the job, in her opinion.

Alano Cortez

Title: The Vision

Song: Hustle by Sundara Karma

Fourth member of the Night Council

Alano was unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time when he was cursed. He was arrested alongside Lilith during her fight with The Witness, and Night Swan originally planned to turn him into a regular Swan Soldier. However, there were a few discrepancies in the corruption spell that she wasn’t aware of. When she changed Lilith into The Huntress, her enthralment connection with Alano had an unexpected effect on the curse, and Alano ended up corrupted alongside her. Night Swan wasn’t quite sure what to do with this information, but she kept him on the council anyway and gave him the title of The Vision.

His curse feeds off of his lack of control over his own life

The Vision will venture out into the public and blend in with other coaches. He is tasked with keeping an eye out for people likely to go against his empress. He’ll listen in on conversations, and when someone is suspected of knowing too much about Night Swan and what she’s doing, he’ll deliver the information to The Huntress to take care of them. 

Alano was always bright, bubbly and friendly with everyone he met. It’s still somewhat the case with The Vision, but he’a a lot more mellowed-out than the usual. There’s also something unsettling about his friendliness, as if it’s all just a persona and there’s something more malicious going on deep down. Nobody quite knows what his deal is, but they don’t care to find out.

Scotty Serrano

Title: The Daydreamer

Fifth member of the Night Council

Scotty was training under Felicia at the time of the AU. The pair are pretty close friends with Vester and Valentine, so when they found out about them joining Night Swan’s council, they knew something was up and they needed to find out what had happened to them. Scotty helped Felicia in her investigations under the condition that he would stick by her side no matter what. It wasn’t long after Lilith and Alano got turned before Scotty was caught snooping around Swan Tower on his own. The Huntress brought him to Night Swan, and she decided to just turn him into a Swan Soldier and go about her day. If this were to happen, then Scotty would look the exact same as everyone else in the Swan army and Felicia would never know what happened to him. If he became a councillor, then it would at least be easier for her to track him down. So out of desperation, he told Night Swan that he knew how to access the Dreamscape (he had learned how to do so during the Cthylla situation). The Witness and The Storyteller could attest to this, as they had helped Scotty get rid of Cthylla when they were still normal coaches. Night Swan became intrigued by this, and she made him a councillor so she could learn about his abilities and use them for herself.

His curse feeds off of his habit of hiding his true feelings

The Daydreamer doesn’t exactly have a solid role on the council, as there isn’t much a teenager can do (in Night Swan’s opinion, at least). He does participate in testing and experiments regarding his ability to access the Dreamscape, and when he isn’t doing that he’ll act as a second pair of hands for the other councillors.

While Scotty is often the warmest and most joyful coach in the room, The Daydreamer is always spaced-out; never quite there and always with an ominous smile on his face. A conversation with him will, more often than not, leave you with a sense of existential dread.

Felicia Klaw

Title: The Enchantress

Song: Under My Skin by Maudlin Strangers

Sixth member of the Night Council

When Scotty was changed into The Daydreamer, he told Night Swan that Felicia was looking into her and the Night Council. She sent her soldiers and the councillors to find her and stop her from exposing her plans. Felicia was prepared for this, and she lasted a week hiding from her hunters before she was eventually caught. Night Swan recognised her as the apprentice of the late Skarlett Klaw. She had worked with Skarlett many times and knew how skilled she was with both light and dark flow. She decided that she could use that power for her own benefit.

Her curse feeds off of her fear of sudden change

The Enchantress helps Night Swan with studying the dark flow in order to develop more powerful spells and perfect the ones she already has. She’s also the one who experiments on The Daydreamer and assists The Witness in studying the ancient artefacts and monuments he finds.

Felicia is one of the more mature members of the group, with a healthy curiosity and a level-headed approach to everything (when her temper isn’t flaring, at least). The Enchantress has a deep, uncontrollable need to know anything and everything, and she does not care what it takes for that to happen. She delves into each unethical study with an intrigued smile on her face and the next experiment already planned in her mind. If it weren't for her empress keeping her in check, every single Swan Soldier would be her lab rat by now.

Talking about my JD ships because I feel like it. Part 1.

Lilith x Layl

These two became a thing when I was setting up the Dancity bracket of the Sexiest Coach Tournament. I saw that these two would go against each other and jokingly thought "what if they kissed, lol". Five minutes later, it was no longer a joke.

In the elaborate story I made up for them in my head, they met each other when Lilth moved to Dancity to begin the world's most reluctant redemption arch. They both had that night-owl lifestyle, and she was intrigued by Layl's artworks, so they started hanging out with each other more and more. There was never really an official "moment" where they got together. They just gradually got more comfortable with each other until they suddenly realised "Wait, we're dating now? Alright then". For decades, Lilith had always been extremely insecure when it came to romantic relationships, so she was pleasantly surprised that she didn't hate whatever was going on between her and Layl.

Layl has this cool, playful personality that balances out Lilith's abrasiveness, and there's a lot of good-natured teasing between the two. Layl is a bit of an adrenaline junkie and she does a lot of parkour in her free time, so she was very happy when Lilith took an interest in it as well.

Seung x Epsilon

I don't remember what got me interested in these two as a pairing. I think I played their maps one after the other and something clicked in my brain.

I made up a whole story in my mind to come up with a reason for why they would meet. Epsilon got himself caught up in Nithe Long's evildoings, and he found out that her and General Jae were working together to find a powerful machine (Beedabop). So he went into hiding on Wasterra and searched for the machine before Jae could. He met the trio from Say My Name, and since they also had a bone to pick with General Jae, they helped him with his quest.

Seung and Epsilon had a mutual attraction for a while, but it took an embarrassingly long time to officially get together. Seung tried to subtly flirt with him, but Epsilon never got the hint, and when he did he would shut himself down because he didn't want to embarrass himself by assuming anything. Kwang and Chul ended up doing bets on how far Seung would go before Epsilon finally put two and two together. Epsilon ended up confessing his feelings first, and it took all of Seung's strength to not combust on the spot.

I think they would have a pretty cute relationship. They bond over their shared interest in machines and technology, and they would find any reason to bump shoulders with each other.

Crystal x Burn P1 (I call her Fiora)

I liked the aesthetic of these two. You can never go wrong with a blue and orange pair.

I headcanon Fiora as a follower of Derkes, and she sees the importance of fire to the cycle of nature. Her role is to redirect wildfires towards areas that need it the most. Crystal is a druid of the High Nymph, so she too appreciates how the right amount of fire could help the natural world thrive.

Fiora's flower crown was actually given to her by Crystal, and in return she gave her the two flowers to put in her antlers. The pair don't often have time to see each other because of their extremely important jobs, but the flowers remind them that they will always find each other. Every time they get the chance, they meet up with each other to dance.

Crystal has to keep up an air of professionalism all the time, and she sometimes forgets to switch off that demeanour when she doesn't need it. Fiora's warm and bubbly personality makes her more comfortable to let loose and outwardly enjoy herself. Fiora often has a problem with allowing her emotions to get away from her and is prone to meltdowns. Every time, Crystal will bring her back to earth and soothe her with her singing and loving words.

I have a lot more ships to share, but I'll do that later so I don't end up with a super long post, lol.
