The English marshes weren’t the ideal vacation destination for most people. Whumpee was not most people. Whumpee was a herpetologist, one of the best in her field, and the marshes were the perfect place to study plenty of specimens up close.
There had been reports of a giant snake lurking beneath the muck. Whumpee knew this was an exaggeration, as even the biggest snakes here wouldn’t get any longer than a few feet.
Her boots squelched in the mud as she shined her flashlight into the darkness ahead. If it were daylight, she might have noticed the abnormally large shadow trailing behind her in the trees above.
She crouched down to examine a very large frog. This particular species of frog usually didn’t get so big, so the sight was quite the treat.
“Hello there,” she whispered.
She was about to pick up the frog when a hand clamped over her mouth and an arm snaked around her waist.
“Hmph!?”
“Shhh, little thing,” a voice hissed sweetly, “no need to be startled.”
It sounded feminine. Was another researcher here? Whumpee felt a weight coil around her ankles, slowly working its way up until her legs were pressed together and her arms were pinned to her sides.
“Don’t scream, okay?”
As soon as the hand came off, Whumpee did just that. She struggled and writhed in her bindings.
In her panic, she looked down at herself and saw what was holding her so tightly. A giant snake’s tail, which had the color and pattern of a marsh adder. The issue was, marsh adders were, by all accounts, tiny compared to the tail coiled around her now. She looked up into a woman’s face.
“I said not to scream!”
Her body seized up as the woman sank razor-sharp fangs into her shoulder. The initial pain was quickly replaced by a terrible numbness that spread from the bite to the rest of her body. She fell limp in the creature’s hold. Whumpee couldn’t scream anymore; her lips wouldn’t even part.
“There, much better,” the woman said.
She smiled down at her catch, her fangs dripping with residual venom. Whumpee stared with wide eyes.
The woman actually giggled.
“You are so cute!” she squealed, “I can’t believe I finally have my very own human!”
The snake-woman shifted her hold, uncoiling herself from Whumpee’s body. She swept her up into a bridal carry and slithered deep into the marsh. Whumpee’s head lolled limply against her chest.
The creature paid no heed to Whumpee’s abject horror. Rather, she was rambling on and on with an eagerness that reminded Whumpee of her own excitement from earlier.
“My name is Carewhumper,” she said, “I wonder what I should call you. I can’t just call you Human. That isn’t very nice. You’ll love it in my home, I made it extra damp and cool and dark. Humans are such curious little things. I need to figure out what you eat. Do you like animals or plants better? Wait, I think humans like setting their food on fire first, right? I like fire, it’s very warm, but it’s kind of dangerous to make one around here. Oh, I am just so excited to have caught you!”
Whumpee got the sinking feeling that she had somehow become the prize specimen in this marsh, and it sounded like Carewhumper was quite the anthropologist. She only hoped the paralysis wasn’t permanent.

Whumpril Day 7 - Ambush
Her only warning was the scuff of a boot against concrete.
Lilith wasn't unfamiliar with being attacked. She's over two hundred years old after all, so she's definitely met one or two coaches who hated her enough to try and wipe her off the map.
Normally, she'd turn into smoke and evade any attempts to grab her. But this time, she knew she was screwed the second she felt the stinging burn of a silver gauntlet. She was completely cut off from the flow and her magical abilities, meaning the only thing between her and the end of a wooden stake was her limited strength.
And she needed all the strength she could get, because one look at this masked stranger told her that there was no sweet-talking her way out of this one.
Hello again! Hope I'm not bombarding your ask box. But um, Detective Whumpee? Go nuts. I love your writing.
Hello, friend! Not bombarding me at all! I do love this prompt. Please enjoy!
Warnings: captivity, restraints, torture, blood, bruises, beating
Whumper paced restlessly in front of Whumpee. Whumpee tried to keep track of Whumper's movements and moods. They had done a great job hunting down clues that led them to Whumper. What they had not done a good job of was protecting themself. Whumper had snatched them and had been beating them ever since.
"I don't believe you," Whumper said as they paced. Their knuckles were bruised from beating Whumpee. "I don't believe that you're some hotshot detective and you wouldn't clue the rest of your team in on what the case was."
Whumpee spat blood on the floor at Whumper's feet. "And I'm telling you the truth. I didn't tell anyone because they didn't believe me about this cold case."
"WHO ELSE KNOWS?" Whumper roared as they punched Whumpee in the face again.
Whumpee sputtered around the blood filling their mouth. "No one! No one! Just me!"
Whumper stopped hitting Whumpee, sinister smile filling their face. "Good. That means I have time to get what I want out of you."

Content: Attempted escape, burns, smoke inhalation, unconsciousness
(Part 1, Part 2)
Atlas scratched at his neck, still remembering the feeling of the suppression collar on his neck. These guys weren't gonna give him a chance to use his powers, huh? He wondered what his cellmate would do if he used his power. He wondered what power he had. Was he a fire user? Water? Earth? Air just like him?
It didn't matter. He wasn't up for talking after the altercation with the guards. He looked at the cell door. Maybe...
If he could scout the area, maybe he can convince the blonde to leave with him. (He still hasn't learned his name.) Picking up a piece of metal, he got to work on the lock. His cellmate stirred, but didn't wake up. Or perhaps he did and he didn't trust him. He didn't blame him. He was a dick to him, but he knew how the guards worked. He was the one who was being loud and attracted their attention.
No, he shouldn't blame him. They were both stuck in there. They both need to work together to get out of here. If he was right about the layout of the place, there should be a tunnel that leads out to the forest. He just needed to figure out where it was.
The lock clicked and he opened the door, making sure it didn't creak loudly. I'll be right back, bud.
He slipped into the shadows, hiding whenever he saw guards either in their spots or talking. They didn't seem to notice which was good. He didn't want them to see him. He didn't want to deal with another round of branding and whipping.
As he moved through the darkness, he thought about his dad. Is he sending the cavalry to look for him right now? Is Mallius organizing a search party? Despite his calm demeanor, he always worried for him. Just like he worried for his sister.
He eventually reached a set of stones that, at first glance, looked the same with their dark color, but upon further inspection, some of them were lighter in color. Tracing his finger on some of them, he noticed the different indents. Could it be a code of some kind?
One of them was shaped like an hourglass. Another was a teardrop. The third stone was a crude sun. The fourth was a small hole that lead to seemingly nothing.
Is this a code of some kind? What could it possibly be?
Someone suddenly grabbed his arm. He turned and saw the guard staring at him. "What do you think you're doing?"
He immediately blew him away and ran. He needed to warn him. He needed to warn his cellmate. If the guards cover it up, it's over.
The hallway suddenly caught fire, causing Atlas to stumble back. He tried to run, but the smoke was quickly building up. Soon, he started coughing. He covered his mouth with his shirt. Why couldn't he be a water user? That would've been very useful.
The smoke continued to build. Atlas crouched down and crawled, the hot stone burning his hands. He only got a few feet before he couldn't control his coughing. He couldn't breathe. What if the whole place burned down? What if he died before he gets the chance to tell his cellmate he found the door? If the guards hadn't covered it up first.
The last thing he thought of before his vision went black was how he could've treated his cellmate better when they met.
