OCR01266: Street Fighter II: The World Warrior: The Ken Song - jdproject
[Ken Stage]
Oh sure, I may have played a couple of games of Street Fighter 2 in the arcade, or on the SNES display at my local Wal Mart, but I never really got into the fighting genre until the Marvel vs. Capcom era. Essentially, my time as a fighting game afficianado began and ended with the period of my life in which I had roommates. Even then, aside from Marvel vs Capcom 2, I was never a big fan of the Street Fighter series; I much preferred games like Soul Calibur, Smash Bros., and Guilty Gear.
Still, the classic themes of Street Fighter 2 worked their way into my brain through some sort of video game osmosis. Maybe it was all the time I spent in MvC 2 and Pocket Fighter, both of which contained versions of the more popular characters' themes. Memory is a funny thing, but I seem to recall being able to recognize the seminal themes like Ryu's, Chun Li's, Guile's, and Ken's even before spending time with the spin-offs.
Either way, Street Fighter 2's soundtrack has rightfully earned a place among the pantheon of true video game classics. As such, covers abound. The Ken Song is one of my favorites, in no small part because it's cover of my favorite of the source tracks. It's got a lot more than going for it than simple song selection, though.
The lyrics may be kinda silly, but they're sung in earnest, and that goes a long way. Furthermore, their rhythm fits the song quite well. Laid down on top of a solid pop/punk guitar you end up with an excellent little tune that stays true to the energetic pace of the original.
