Eyes glinting a little too yellow for his liking, Chris hunched himself over a chair, his fingers gripping white on its arms. “Okay,” he started over, using that same shit-eating tone of voice, “I was hoping to ease into this, but since you obviously don’t wanna treat me like I’m grown, I’ll skip the small talk. When were you gonna tell me Silas was back?” His gaze snapped to Jack. Betrayed wasn’t the right word, didn’t really approach the roiling in his chest or in his head, but it came close enough. “So that’s how this is, is it? Here I was, thinking I had your word…” There was no cringing from Jack, just more of that damned smirking. “You wound me. I didn’t tell him anything, he already knew. Didn’t you, Boy Scout? Threw me for a loop. Here I was, thinking the family had turned a new leaf, that we were talking to each other now. Eh. Should’ve known better.” And maybe it made him a fool, but he believed him. If Jack had wanted to tell Chris so badly, he would’ve told him that first morning. There wouldn’t’ve been any pussyfooting, dragging it on and on for a calendar month. That meant someone else had spilled the beans, though. That meant someone else had gone against him. Jed looked to Chris. “Who told you?”
