Seers, squatters, agitators, angels, lost souls—man, I hear echoes of the past. I hear Ginsberg, the best minds of a generation howling against cops and developers and occupying squats empty of all save the mental furniture. I hear Dylan and Desolation Row, Good Samaritans and the carnival and everyone famous long ago, and The Clash, calling us out to riot on our own. Most of all, I can’t help but hear the old angelic cacophony of the Paris Commune, the ‘festival of the oppressed’ that occupied the streets of Paris a century or so before the Lower East Side’s festival of the oppressed occupied Tompkins Square Park. In fact, accounts of the 1870s Paris Commune, written by its participants, could easily enough be mistaken for reports [of the Lower East Side]. While it lasted, the Commune—or for that matter the Lower East Side—ran on the ‘free and spontaneous cooperation of all individual energies.’ It interlaced ‘heroism and laughter,’ mixed ‘fighting and singing,’ reveled in loudly sung lyrics like ‘They’re the Rabble! Well, I’m one of them!’ And it—the Paris Commune, that is, or the Lower East Side—erupted in defiance of a centralized government and an urban redevelopment scheme designed to push the poor and la boheme out of the City’s central districts.

I am already so fucking hyped for this thing I am probably not going to survive. If I suddenly disappear I will most likely have exploded from overactive imagination related hypertension. 😝
