Winemakers at the Lions Club: Habit Wine Company’s Jeff Fischer!
There’s a thing about California we think. Grapes that we know and love from the old world can turn a beautiful new face to the light given a dose of the impressive native sunlight there, good conditions in the vineyard, and a steady hand in the winery. It doesn’t happen all the time but a couple of examples include old-school Cabernet Sauvignon and, more recently, Trousseau. There are lots of smaller, more specific examples of this phenomena and we think you’ll agree that Jeff’s surprising and very delicious Gruner Veltliner also fits the bill, even if, as you’ll see, he’s generally focused on grapes whose history lies in Bordeaux. California is an amazing place for growing fruit, but it also has some magical qualities that matter to people and their states of mind. Let’s just say a lot of small revolutions have come from this state. The most exciting wine coming from California recently has been from smaller producers and Habit is part of that tribe. Have you ever wished you could pick up a bottle that everyone was going to love for dinner? We offer you the three below! And a chance to come taste them with Jeff himself, TONIGHT!
Did we mention he’s also a TV star????
Let there be WINE, BREAD, CHEESE, and VINYL!
Habit Wine Company, Santa Ynez Valley Chenin Blanc Jurrassic Park Vineyard 2016
We first tasted this wine with Jeff at a big event in the city a couple of years ago but the memory has lasted. A perfect example of the “different light” we’re talking about – almost like drinking a picture of the vineyard – this wine is channeling some serious minerality. We drink a lot of Chenin here in New York but we can’t remember one that brings an earthy note this deep. $35
Habit Wine Company, Grüner Veltliner Santa Ynez Valley 2017
Another face-to-the-sun stunner, this Gruner is electric and gravelly at the same time. White flowers, fresh citrus and some stone fruit drive a wine that you’ll want to tasted again and again. We want to taste it all day. Habit sources from some of the best site in Santa Barbara county. $35
Habit Wine Company, Cabernet Franc Coquelicot Vineyard Santa Ynez Valley 2017
Habit is well-know for their deft treatment of Bordeaux grapes in Santa Barbara and this vineyard-specific Cab Franc is from this line. Deep and black-fruited with spicy notes and a healthy dose of red earth, the Coqulicot is at home in the backyard or the dining room. Seriously beautiful! $35
