"Increasingly, particularly on the internet, one of the worst things you can be is “cringe” — to be so awkward, un-self-aware, over-earnest, passionate, or guileless that you inadvertently become a target of bullying for personality traits that in effect harm no one"
This Vox article, written is response to Shuman's New Yorker profile on Jeremy Strong is excellent. That profile was an incredibly one side, broad-brushed depiction of the actor which he did not deserve. The internet's reaction to it was quite disappointing. So what if he's kind of strange? His co-stars clearly don't hate him and he's a functional adult who has formed a rather unique relationship with his craft. It's a damn good one. Society needs to let artists go and be a little insane and pretentious if they want there to be any good art.
