Jerry Green is a Total Moron

The above headline is really not a surprise to anyone who's ever read Jerry Green's dribble. The reason The Detroit News continues to publish said dribble is as confusing as Green's undiagnosed dementia. Green, in a column that was published (on purpose) by the News the other day, calls the Detroit Tigers franchise "dishonorable" and a bunch of "quitters" following their selling (trading) of 3 future Free Agents (David Price, Joakim Soria, Yoenis Cespedes) in favor of "rebooting" for this year and next. And the reasons for not being buyers now is rather simple: the Tigers for much of this season have been an underachieving bunch. A well hitting team that has at times sputtered; starting pitching that has regressed from the start (i.e. - Shane Greene, Alfredo Simon); the bullpen is/was a disaster; bad luck... We can probably come up with several more reasons. In the end though, the Tigers finally saw that they were probably not going to win with what they had. And the well of prospects in the system is far too dry to assume that any deals at the deadline could be made to help improve the ball club. Green clearly doesn't see this. He's chasing rainbows instead. "The maneuvers left manager Brad Ausmus in the lurch, vulnerable - a candidate to become a scapegoat after a season of major injuries and front-office surrender." No Jerry: Ausmus won't be a scapegoat here because he's already not a great manager. He's often mis-managing the pitching staff (i.e. - taking pitchers out too early/late; bad pitching matchups; using Ian Krol for any reason) and it appears that he's still learning this job on the fly. Sentiments that many fans said when he was handed the keys to an already stacked major league franchise last season. Things didn't end so well for him then, either. "In their attempts to win a World Series, the Tigers have stripped bare a farm-system that had been barely productive over the past decade or longer..." Not sure where Jerry is going with that line, but it's my belief that yes, the farm system is stripped bare. Who are you going to trade for 'win-now' talent? "They quit even with the knowledge that are to be fortified shortly in August by the return of Miguel Cabrera." Miguel Cabrera isn't the reason the Tigers are playing like horse manure right now. Unless he's the one coming out of the bullpen blowing leads and baseball games, this logic is also flawed. Moving along... "The Tigers panicked and grabbed at a bunch of uncredentialed minor leaguers while forfeiting qualified veterans. It's a reboot - and an abject surrender." Clearly Jerry is thinking of 'right just now' and not next year and beyond. That's fine, we all want our team to win right now. At some point, reality has to sink in somewhere and at some time, and that time was now. He wants to chase that World Series now; but Jerry quickly forgets that last year's team had a markedly better rotation - a rotation that had the Tigers competitive in their postseason series with Baltimore, a series in which the bullpen was a complete disaster en route to a 3-game series sweep. And the Tigers could chase David Price after this season (Jerry hints at this, too), but will likely not be able to afford him (much like they couldn't afford Max Scherzer)... so why not get max-value for him now? Cespedes would have brought zero compensation should he move on after Free Agency, so getting two arms for him *now* makes sense for the future. He's blasting the notion that the Tigers are retooling with unproven young players, but that's exactly what prospects are: *unproven*. The Tigers are currently in a place they're not quite used to since their winning ways started in 2006: chasing from behind. Way behind. The Royals are the new and current overlords. They started fast, and they're still going fast. The Tigers might be 4-time defending division champs, but it's no longer their division to lose. And sure, they're within reach of the Wild Card, but so are several other teams, including the 3 teams that are ahead of the Tigers right now. And right now, the Tigers aren't going to go anywhere in October until they win most of their series' (if not *all* of them) before October. The Tigers last series win was 2 out of 3 in Seattle July 6-8. They have lost or merely split 6 series' since then, and 2 of their next 3 series' are against.... Yep, the Royals. So Jerry, feel free to further justify why the Tigers should have gone "all in" at the deadline. Pushing the very few chips into the middle of the table would have likely been futile work by Dave Dombrowski, so he did the right thing. The Tigers can still be competitive down the stretch, they just need to do it with different people. Better to get something now than to get little or nothing later. Nothing dishonorable about that. It's smart business-baseball. Look into that angle, Jerry, before you decide to pen the next bit of hogwash about the Tigers.
