God, seriously. I went from being like, unable to distinguish most of the nuns ("grouchy nun? glasses nun? not-Helen Mirren nun?") at all to being unable to decide which character is my favorite because I love them all so much.

Oh agreed! And it’s true that Shakespeare doesn’t give us as many tragic heroines, but you can tell that Webster was undoubtedly influenced by Shakespeare and characters like Cleopatra and Lady M.

yes yes, definitely! Bosola would also be at home in a Shakespeare play, I've always felt.

(You can't touch Shakespeare for comic heroines though -- the only one who comes close is Moll Frith in The Roaring Girl. Who is, of course, awesome in all ways. People should totally do that play more.)

It's part of its charm! And it has probably the greatest tragic heroine in Renaisssance drama, outside of Shakespeare (maybe outside of Shakespeare; he doesn't write as many tragedies with women as central figures, but Cleopatra and Juliet are both amazing so idk).

(Possibly my favorite moment from my grad school reading group was when we did this play. I read the title role and my diss director was Bosola and since we were the only people who were all that serious about the acting component, you could have heard a pin drop during the prison scene. It was awesome ;))
