What's Paris like at this time of year?
Yes, France Télévisions won the Junior Eurovision a-blimmin-gain.
Not that we're at all bothered by this: "Ce monde" was the best song in the contest.
From the very start, it's coded as French: the singer wears a beret, strappy dress, boots. Lou sings a meaningful chanson about life, and how this world is not as good as it ought to be.
The first verse adds to the emotional heft: it's all filmed in black-and-white, emphasising the desolation and loneliness of the song. Colour arrives during the first chorus: the picture resolves to a red outfit, with gold around the winner. Er, around the performer. My immediate thought: "Dammit, France Télévisions, you've done it again; if this doesn't win, it's going to be almost all the way up there."
Lots of other songs to love, unlike last year. "Motanka", the entry in Ukranian, a response to the war sung by someone who probably doesn't remember the peaceful times. "Brave heart", the latest star in a field of entries from Armenia's broadcaster. "Para onde vai o amor?", the sad and lovely entry in Portuguese.
"Erase un vez", the finale of a great musical about the joy of reading, set in a library with cats and a magical librarian: would someone please write that musical. The concept staging from "Miao miao", all the cats! And they're over the moon in San Marino, as "Beyond the stars" put the teeny-tiny broadcaster on the left-hand side of the table for the first time ever.
Last year's show was experimental, and i don't think worked as entertainment, and left me feeling a bit grubby. This year, they've dialled back the fashion, and made solid and quality television.
Plus! Some friendly Countdown games results in someone winning the series, why Freya Skye is going to be next year's star, and Alex McMillan has a superb post about reality shows in different cultures.
And i've a few quick words on Gifted, the CBBC drama about children with superpowers. Being able to read minds / see the future / levitate / manifest ghosts - that's all fine. Having a contestant take their mobile phone onto a television set - that's completely impossible. The show's very much worth your time.
