When fourteen-year-old Jesse Pomeroy was arrested in 1874 for the murder of Horace Millen, he was thought to have tortured at least six children and tortured and murdered two more. The two murder victims, ten-year-old Katie Curran and four-year-old Horace Millen had both been stabbed and nearly decapitated. Katie also had a fractured skull and several broken bones. Horace had also been nearly castrated, had one eyeball deeply pierced, and been set on fire. The victims that had managed to survive his attacks had suffered whippings, stabbings, beatings, which included broken noses and split lips, vicious bites to the face and buttocks, attempted castration, and attempted scalping. At the time of his arrest for Horace Millen’s murder, Jesse’s reputation in Boston as the “Boy Torturer” was firmly established.
In the month of September of 1872 a series of violent murders and attacks took place.
In the early September of 1872, a seven-year-old boy names William Loftus murdered his five-year-old neighbor, named Jenny Chandler. According to the New-Albany Ledger, he tried to make her put her arm under a blade of cutting machine. When little Jenny refused and tried to ran away, William grabbed his shotgun and pushed her into the backyard where he shot her and ‘filled her stomach with snails’. Jenny Chandler died at sunrise, clinging to her life for more than sixteen hours.
In the early September of 1872, just a few days later of the murder of Jenny Chandler. Four-year-old William Hill was shot in the head by his neighbor. Sixteen-year-old James Duffy, who was showing off his dad’s new shotgun accidentally shot the loaded gun into the head of William.
In the early September of 1872, on the same day as the murder of William Hill, the murder of Stephen Quail occurred. Stephen died when an elderly lady, who was annoyed by Stephen and his friends who were playing ring-a-levio, threw a brick of the roof of where she lived which landed on Stephen’s head fracturing his skull.
Later in September of 1872, a four-year-old girl names Becky Holloway was forced to hold her mouth to a spout of a hot tea-kettle as a punishment by her parents. Her mouth was filled with hot steam, scalding her so badly that it was nearly fatal. The parents were arrested on the same day.
Even though all the tragedies happened that month, the violent attacks of Jesse Pomeroy were most infamous and remembered. But then, nobody knew who was behind the attacks. Two years later, after Pomeroy’s murders they finally knew his identity.
[x] For the portrait in dry blood of Jesse Pomeroy.
Pity is not natural to man. Children always are cruel. Savages are always cruel.
