ARTISTS TO LISTEN TO: TAKE A BREATH

Take a Breath, otherwise known as TAB by their loving fans are a four piece Alternative Rock band from Pittsburgh. The band consists of Jesse Rossi (Vocals/Guitar), Ryan Bentley (Vocals/Guitar), Luke Bickerstaff (Vocals/Bass) and Michael O’Malley (Vocals/Drums), who also produced the latest EP.

Recently Take a breath released an EP named ‘The Anatomy of a Rose’ The EP includes 5 songs all completely different but fantastic all the same. The first song from the EP is called “Loaded Conversation”. The opening of the song is one you know you want to hear live. The song is lyrically great and with the heavy beat the whole way through, you know where these boys want to be in terms of the music scene.

The second song is Anatomy, this song was released before the whole EP and it took off really well. With the catchy chorus and a great melody you will be singing the song for days! (Literally, it will be in your head within the first 30 seconds of the song). The bridge is a repeat of “I don’t know how to not break your heart” which I imagine gets the crowd going when it’s sang live and it leads up to an amazing guitar solo by young and talented guitarist, Ryan.

The EP comes to a slow during the middle. The third song “A Little Ways Down the Road…” you might recognise from the show How I met your mother but I promise it’s a beautiful song too! I don’t have much to say about this song apart from listen to it because you’ll understand what I mean straight away. “He craves love but breathes in the city like smoke from a cigarette” are extremely clever and interesting lyrics and will make you fall in love with the song even more than you are already. The Harmonies on this are also a 10/10.

With the EP coming to a close and you thinking it can’t get better, “Venomous” is up and it’s gonna completely blow you away. I’ve never found a more catchy song like this and I’m always singing the chorus everywhere. With the cheeky lyrics and chanting chorus it’s definitely one you want to hear live and that should be played across stadiums one day.

The final song from The Anatomy of a Rose is “Constellations”. If you didn’t know what you were listening to and Jesse’s voice was identical to Alex Gaskarth’s you would think this was straight up and All Time Low song. The lyrics all piece together perfectly and mixed in with the “Woah’s” throughout the song it could be a hit you’d hear on the radio. It has “We’re just kids who start fire’s, we get burned it’s alright” which are also lyrics from Loaded Conversation, the first song from the EP cleverly placed into this one too. Overall this EP is one you should totally go listen and mixed in with the great lyrics that you would see in people’s twitter bio’s and songs that should be sang in stadiums, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed by Take A Breath!

Take A Breath

At the last Hollywood Ending show on August 15th at iPlay America, Freehold, NJ we saw the band Take A Breath for the first time. This band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania had a pop-punk/pop-rock kind of feel. They were the first band and started at roughly 12:15. It was a little too early to feel the concert hype but man, what a way to start a show.They really hit those harmonies in Over Again hard and when they covered old school Taylor Swift, the crowd jammed hard. Their whole vibe was energetic and it’s that type of music where you can just rock out to wherever you are; they put on such a great performance. If you like early All Time Low, Simple Plan, and 25 lbs of bananas from Ethiopia then you would like this band. We got the chance to talk to these great boys and get their story.

When did the band form? Mike: 2 years ago

How did Jesse like performing with The Big Time? Luke:He loved it, he loved being on the road and on the move. He doesn’t really like sitting around at home.

What’s your favorite song from the EP? Luke: Venomous Mike: Anatomy. It was the kind of song that wrote itself, and I like that. Ryan: Venomous

What’s your favorite song overall? Luke: Can I say a couple? Well, Walk On by U2 since it’s tattooed on me. Purple Rain by Prince, and Round Here by Counting Crows. Mike: Anything One Direction, If You Want It by Relient K and Uninspired by Cartel Ryan: I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead by Set It Off

What are your favorite bands? Luke: One Direction and U2 Mike: One Direction and State Champs, I also like bands that have their own sound; I like all of these other bands but then they all start sounding the same and even having the same meaning. Ryan:I can say the cliche answer and say Green Day but I also like Carbon Leaf

How do you feel about Zayn leaving One Direction? Mike: It’s different, they put on a better performance Luke: Harry Styles is a unicorn

What’s your story? Mike: My family has always been musical, every song I’ve ever heard and instrument I’ve ever picked up just came naturally. I never really enjoyed it but I felt so grounded and it just felt right. My parents told me not to choose this career but I did it to prove them wrong.

Luke: My dad is a musician so I kind of wanted to follow his footsteps. Playing, performing and listening to music just makes me feel at home. I could read a book or watch a movie but nothing will ever hit me as hard as a song would. Music is the reason why I’m here; I was never happy in school,it wasn’t really fulfilling. Doing what I do now, it’s the only time I feel good.

Ryan: Very scary question. It’s also a very undecided question. I’m still learning and I could tell you everything from my life before this moment but that does not affect who I am now.

      Pittsburgh natives Take A Breath released their EP Anatomy Of  A Rose at midnight on June 15, 2015. Jesse Rossi, Luke Bickerstaff, Michael O’Malley and Ryan Bentley - all under the age of 20 just shattered the expectations of fans, friends and skeptics alike. Rossi and O’Malley, the only original members of the band left in the current line up already have 1 EP under their belts. The Anatomy of a Rose is something special. Only made up of five songs, this EP is honestly like nothing i’ve ever heard. Each track is different; has different elements, and just a completely different sound from track to track.      “A little ways down the road” is very The 1975 esque, with the guitars that sound like they’re off some hit single from the 70’s - but then you get to “Constellations” and it sounds like something right off Future Hearts. After going through the EP, “Venomous” and “Loaded Conversation” are my favorites. Venomous opens with a few catchy guitar chords that will immediately have you dancing a little bit; it’ll hook you right away. Now, as 4 teenage boys you can guess what these songs are about; Love lost and gained and girls, but they aren’t your normal same key love songs that you’d hear on an EP from such a young band. These dressed up love songs are something you would see out of bands like All Time Low, Mayday Parade and Pierce the Veil; these ballads that are energy charged with heavy guitar won’t make you want to call your ex, they’ll make you want to throw your phone and keep dancing.       This EP has songs that will become legendary, these are the type of lyrics that even if you aren’t a fan of the band, you’ll end up screaming back. Everyone knows the cough in “Dear Maria” by All Time Low and I know that eventually frontman Jesse Rossi’s “Go” in the bridge of “Loaded Conversation” will become a staple as well. Vocally this band is unique; Rossi being 6’4, at least, and at only 19 you wouldn't expect such a soprano voice. An issue some singers have when they have such a high register to their voice, they’ll start to sound a bit nasally; they’ll start to sing in their head voice but Jesse has perfected his naturally smooth soprano tone on and off the stage.       I’ve had the pleasure of seeing these guys on stage a few times and they do not disappoint at all. The energy they have and how they project it in any situation is quite impressive! A show at the Smiling Moose I attended was miserable, it was hot and crowded; not an environment that makes you want to enjoy a show. When I got in the opening chords to “Venomous” just began and the energy that Bentley and Bickerstaff exuded in those temperatures was great. Not one sluggish movement was seen during their whole set! The musicianship that these guys show at such a young age is one of the most impressive things about them. Ryan (lead guitar) at only 17 has the skill and precision of an experienced player of at least 15-20 years. The guitar solo in loaded conversation is impeccable on the album, but live its on a completely different level. O’Malley doesn’t only display his talents in the production aspect of all the band’s music, he’s also mastered guitar and drums. When it comes to triple threats, O’Malley is the cream of the crop in the Pittsburgh pop punk scene. Frontmen are usually the focus of everyone, but every time I see Take A Breath, it’s Bentley and Bickerstaff that pull me in. Don’t sleep on this band, or push them back on your bands to listen to and get to know, TAB are quickly gaining speed..faster than any local band I’ve seen. Check them out anywhere and any way you can. That change in the air you’ve been feeling? It’s Take A Breath mark my words.
