Why I don't really ship Jetave (Jet the Hawk x Wave the Swallow)
This one's probably gonna be unpopular, but... Jetave has just never clicked for me.
And it's not because I think it's a bad ship.
Or because it's "too popular" and I'm trying to be different.
I actually understand why it's one of the most popular Sonic ships.
Jet and Wave have years of history together.
They bounce off each other well, and their banter is definitely the most entertaining part of their relationship.
They have chemistry, and if that's what draws people to the ship, I completely get it.
The thing is... that same chemistry is exactly why I don't ship them.
For me, the Babylon Rogues already feel like a family.
Jet, Wave, and Storm have that chaotic sibling energy where they constantly argue, tease each other, and get on each other's nerves, but at the end of the day they're still a team.
They have that "us against the world" vibe, and I've always preferred it that way.
That's the dynamic I naturally see when I look at them, so when I try to view Jet and Wave romantically, it just kind of falls flat for me.
Not because I think romance would be bad, but because I already feel like their relationship is complete.
I also think Jetave became one of the default Sonic ships because it's the most straightforward romantic interpretation of the Babylon Rogues.
They spend the most time together, they already have an established relationship, and they're a male and female duo.
Those are all perfectly valid reasons to ship them.
But those usually aren't the reasons I become invested in a pairing.
When I ship characters, I'm usually looking for relationships that reveal new sides of both people or create opportunities for growth that I don't already see in their existing dynamic.
One of the biggest reasons Jetave doesn't click for me is that, when I compare it to my favorite Jet ships or my favorite Wave ships, I struggle to see what romance adds that I wasn't already getting from their canon relationship.
I already love their teamwork.
I already love their banter.
I already love the trust they've built over the years.
So instead of wondering what they'd be like as a couple, I find myself thinking, "I already love what they are."
For me, romance doesn't really unlock a new side of either character.
It doesn't make me see them differently or make me curious about where their relationship could go in the same way some of my favorite ships do.
I don't feel like romance enhances their dynamic.
If anything, I prefer them exactly as they are: two teammates who bicker like siblings and somehow still make an incredible team.
That's just how I've always read their relationship.
If Jetave works for you, that's awesome.
It just isn't one I've ever been able to connect with.
(My brain has apparently filed the Babylon Rogues under "found family" and refuses to move them. I've accepted this.)
