Imagine hypnotizing Jevil.

You propose playing a game with him to which he gleefully agrees. It takes some effort to tire him out, but somehow, you happen to be very capable.

Is the world spinning, or is it just his head?

One minute he's full of energy and bouncing off the walls, the next he's putty in your hands. You gently hold the sides of his face, rubbing your thumb against his cheeks. He's melting to your touch. Trying to make eye contact with him while his eyes are very crossed and unfocused. He listens intently to your every word. His tail occasionally gives a gentle wag.

He's been "free" this whole time, but this, this wonderful fuzzy feeling, is truly freeing to him.

Jevil always found it funny how serious you were. It was as if you didn't allow yourself to succumb to the fun and chaos it brought. But that only meant that Jevil was going to try harder and eventually succeed in his business.

He teased you and flirted with you many times, even though there was simply no response. You didn't ignore him, but at the same time your expression remained the same and you just watched his efforts, neither encouraging nor forbidding him to do anything. For Jevil, it was a sign that he could keep trying to get your reaction. He wanted to see the blush on your cheeks or how nervous you would be. He wanted to see at least some kind of reaction that would show that you weren't an insensitive person.

He wanted to see the embarrassment on your face just once. He tried every day for this, flirting, joking and teasing you in various ways. But so far there has been no reaction. It went on like this for a really long time. Until one day something happened that he couldn't have expected.

He was flirting with you again, not really expecting any kind of response, and when he felt your eyes on him, he smiled wider. You looked at him carefully, then pointed your finger guns at him and winked. Jevil froze, realizing what you had done, and his face began to rapidly turn red.

Seeing this, your lips stretched into a grin, which only made him even more embarrassed. He blushed, seemingly to the tips of his ears. He couldn't understand why when he was flirting with you, you had absolutely no reaction, but once you flirted with him, he immediately blushed, as if you had done the most embarrassing thing in the world.

"It should be the other way around! You should have been embarrassed when I was flirting with you, not the other way around!"

You looked surprised, and then you laughed. At first it was just a quiet giggle, which was replaced by full-fledged laughter. This is the first time Jevil has heard you laugh. He looked at you in fascination and felt his heart begin to beat faster.

Looking at you laughing, he realized that this was the most embarrassing thing he had ever seen. Your sincere smile was what made him speechless. At that moment, Jevil realized that he would like to hear you laugh again.

~After Jevil spiraled, you continued to visit him, sneaking past the guards and making excuses to leave and see him.

~He sometimes acted as though he hardly knew you. Jevil felt like a stranger to you- had he always been a bit mad? Certainly, but not in such a way that he needed to be locked away. He'd play games with you as he always had, but suddenly you felt as though something bad would happen to you if you didn't win. There was a subtle darkness about him that he never used to have. He used to play such fun games with you, sometimes he'd even let you win even though he easily could've won in one simple move. But now, he chooses the games, games he knows he'll win at. Games he knows that he can hurt you with.

~Mostly "play fighting".

~If you do happen to get hurt, he tells you to get up, it's just a game. You can't really be hurt, anyway, life itself is a game and you wake up everyday to play it. You're fine.

~Perhaps Jevil likes seeing you panic and try to run or fight back. Reminds him of his first reaction to learning "The Truth".

~...or perhaps he's just ridiculous and knows ahead of time that all you have to do is fetch a snack and you'll be fine. You've noticed he never actually has managed to hit you when you're beginning to get tired or have been scratched a few times (10 HP).

~The moment you try to leave for good, he can tell. He's not ignorant, and he certainly is far more observant than you believe he is. You're acting odd. You're walking on eggshells to not upset him even though you already know he won't be upset, he doesn't seem to care about anything, anyway. You don't let him know the next time you'll return to see him. He knows.

~Jevil doesn't care to reflect on his actions, but he does know that he's actively pushing you away. You'd return again and again if he were a bit more gentle. He wouldn't need to calm down, he would just need to make sure you're safe and unharmed.

~That's boring.

~But it's also necessary to keep you.

~Jevil's free, now, and you're still trapped. He can't follow you into prison to bring you back. He has to rely on you to come to him.

You felt rather sorry leaving him- not only for him, but for yourself. You had known Jevil for quite a long time. Breaking off such a long friendship (possibly more than a friendship) caused your heart to squeeze longingly in your chest. You could endure his madness, couldn't you? You could stay. You'd miss him if you left.

...

No, those are toxic thoughts. You deserve more than this. You swallowed down your sadness, and bid him goodbye. You hoped he wouldn't be able to tell that this was the last time he'd ever see you- it wasn't like he could do anything about it, anyway. He was locked up. He had no control over you.

You stood up from sitting against the wall, stretching your legs and tilting your head to stretch your neck. "Well, it's getting late," You told Jevil, "I'll see you later." No, you won't.

"Bye!" You smiled at him, waved your fingertips, and turned on heel to trot off without waiting for a response from him. Unfortunately, Jevil was terribly quick. You felt his hand shoot out to grab you harshly by the shirt, and the moment you turned in alarm, he changed his grip to your wrist, instead.

He knows.

"LIGHTNER, LIGHTNER," Jevil used his free hand to clutch one of the bars of his freedom. His face was only illuminated by the torch that burned blue upon the stone wall. You couldn't see his pupils, hidden by a constant shadow that would still somehow find it's way into his eyes even if you shined a light directly onto him.

"YOU'RE LEAVING. OH, WHAT A TERRIBLE WEB TO BE WEAVING. BOO HOO, BOO HOO, MUCH WOE TO YOU, WHO WILL NEVER BE FREE - DO YOU INSIST ON LEAVING ME, ME?"

You internally scowled. 'What a terrible web to be weaving', you thought mockingly, 'how dare he try to guilt trip me.'

Jevil was eerily quiet. Sometimes you couldn't even get a word in without him shouting excitedly. His silence was far louder than anything he could've said. He was waiting for you to speak, but what else could you say? Explaining his treatment towards you wouldn't do a single thing. It probably wouldn't even register in his brain. Talking to him would be useless. "I'll be back soon," You lied easily through your teeth. Your eyes flicked down to his hand, which was clamped tightly around your wrist- damn, that hurts. You can even see something sharp poking through the fabric of his mittens. He has claws. You didn't know that.

Jevil let go of the cell bar, pointing up at you accusingly and jumping in place. "BAHA! BAHA! UHEE HEE HEE! YOU LIE, LIE TO ME!" He cackled madly, aggressively pulling you forward by the wrist. You could feel the circulation being cut off.

You were beginning to panic as you stumbled forward from the force of his tug. "Jevil, let go," you told him firmly.

To your surprise, he did.

"OH, HOW MY GAMES ARE TOO MUCH FOR YOU. TOO MUCH EXCITEMENT! TOO MUCH FUN! IT TIRES YOU OUT, OUT! I SHOULD'VE KNOWN- A SIMPLE CHAOS FOR ME IS A WHIRLWIND FOR YOU! MY POOR LIGHTNER, LIGHTNER." Jevil cooed, now gently holding your hand in his. He pet your knuckles very softly, looking up at you sympathetically.

He's luring you back into his trap. He loves you, he'll treat you gently, he'll play with you and make you laugh, he understands that you're hurt and want to get away. You knew what he was doing, but still, you subconsciously began to calm down. You didn't even know that you were falling for this. And you thought you were so self-aware and headstrong.

"No, because I-"

"AND IF YOU TAKE YOUR DEPARTURE, WHO WILL TELL YOU OF ALL I, AND ONLY I, KNOW?"

That's true. Jevil somehow knew things that nobody else could ever even think of. His words were often difficult to understand, but made sense once something happened to you that made you think, "oh, that's what he meant.". As though he could tell the secrets of the past better than anyone who had lived it, knew what was happening in the present moment better than anyone who was living in it, and able to speak of the future better than any fortune-teller could predict. You wanted to be prepared for whatever happened. Jevil always knew what would happen, even if he would only speak of it in riddles.

How would you manage without some idea of what was going to happen?

You rely on him too much.

Jevil filled the quiet after a moment of letting you contemplate this. "COME BACK TOMORROW - YOU'LL SEE WHAT I HAVE IN STORE! SMALL GAMES, SILLY GAMES, GAMES TO MAKE YOU SMILE, GAMES TO DELIGHT YOU! I'LL MISS YOU, AND YOU'LL MISS ME, TOO, TOO!"

You could tell this mattered to him. It made you feel cared for. Rarely did he speak so directly to you in words that made sense. He loved you. He knew he was too much for you. He won't do it again.

And yet, deep down, you knew it was all just lies that he was feeding you- sweet tasting lies that you lapped up eagerly, but would ultimately give you a mouthful of cavities in the end.
