In my attempts to soothe myself and bring focus and intention to my life, I’ve taken to learning about witchcraft. The great thing about it is that you can tailor little meditation practices and rituals to suit what you want to invoke or banish in your life, and that there are so many great feminist witch zines and books that will help you formulate your own practice while being mindful about not co-opting the traditions of marginalized peoples. I have a little altar now full of things meaningful to me, or just things that soothe or comfort me to look at, smell, or hold. One of my favorite things is the little red dreidel held in my great-grandmother’s antique egg cup, surrounded by rosemary for strength and memory, and a bay leaf for protection. This is a little bit of ancestral worship I came up with, using one of my early childhood toys as a symbol for myself tied to my heritage, supported within a vessel tied to my ancestors. I’ve never been particularly religious or metaphysical, but this feels like a form of meditation that gives me something to do tangibly, a ritual to perform, that makes me feel calmed after having done it.
