Jillian & Emmet almost won TAR Canada 4!
jillian & emmett lied?! NO WAY. of course they did. so proud of them.
jillian and emmett are more like an old married couple than exes
really enjoying jillian and emmett on the amazing race canada
On BBCAN, Jillian won all of the endurance comps (except the last) because of her yoga skills. Considering Elissa is a master at yoga, she would have a good chance to win HOH if it were endurance. One can only hope..
The earned and the unearned, Machiavellian musings on the Big Brother Canada Finale.
" I don't want to take credit for anything I don't deserve" - Emmett Bloise, Big Brother Canada Finalist after his first (of three) disqualifications.
(Warning spoiler for the results of the BB Canada Finale to Follow)
Tonight these words echoed back to me, as I watched Emmett clap and cheer boisterously as his co-contestant and HOH-roommate Jillian McLaughlin clinched the Champion title on Canada's first season of Big Brother. I'd like to begin by offering a warm congratulations, to the two finalists both of whom were poised to make Big Brother History Tonight.
Gary being the the first black and gay male to make it so far, and Jillian being the first contestant both winning the most HOH's and not being nominated for eviction throughout at entire season. Truly an accomplishment and I don't think we could have had a better final two. There were clear contrasts between these finalists however,
Gary leveraged his strong competition performance and social game, he also spent considerable time in the game as a nominee for eviction which was likely a driving force for these previous strengths. His colorful personality, also earned him a pivotal second wind, when awarded a powershift, sending him back into the house post-eviction. It's notable that Alec in a jury debate session considered this a competition win in itself and not an unfair advantage. Jillian enjoyed a very privileged position in the house comparatively. She broke out early in the game as an endurance competitor threat, later cementing a strategic and romantic alliance with Emmett soon after. The joint comp performance of "Jemmett" resulted in an impressive competition resume that acted as a beneficial nomination deterrent in weeks that the Jemmett alliance was not in the HOH room. Due to this Jillian was less reliant on her social game, and also having never being nominated, campaigning was not a part of her game. Most of her serious and consequential interactions in the house came from a position of power (when HOH) or Proxy power (When Emmett won) and usually(maybe always) involved broken promises. Naturally Jillian had more incensed Jury members ready to hold her to account however, one small error erased that possibility and resulted in Jillian's win. But did she deserve this?
This season on a whole really made me think about impression management, it amazes how much all of these contestants, want to project the best possible impression of themselves (and even trick themselves into believing it). Recall Mr Bloise's quote at the beginning. In their defence though, that's only human. The fundamental attribution error, tells us that we tend attribute our negative traits to our circumstance, and our positive traits to our static identity. It's a way to protect the ego
"She finds the loop holes, to make herself feel good" - Peter Brown BBCan Jury Debate I perused some news after the finale to get a general glimpse of the buzz regarding the voting controversy, apparently in an interview Jillian's response to the technicality was the following.
“They’ve never changed any [rules] during the show. They didn't change them before so why change them now?”
Jillian is right about this, the rules are the rules, and to Jillian's credit she was able to get three legitimate Jury votes to help secure a win ultimately, albeit it was still a win in error. However one thing should be clear from the season, Jillian has never cared about rules,(neither has Emmett) worst yet her word or integrity both of which calls for some flexibility/strategy. In both of these elements we can argue for one finalist playing better than the other based on the jury vote that should have and almost did take place. In the end someone always lies and schemes better than their co-finalist and based on the obvious favor of the jury towards Gary we can deduce it was him.
Recall that Jillian was a fellow disqualified contestant during the week Emmett lost his HOH, staunchly defended him during this third and final DQ, and notoriously screwed Topaz over with an empty deal during which Emmett was DQ'ed a second time. It is notable that Emmett worried over the physical pain of this endurance comp urged Jillian to make a deal with Topaz...and later derided her in his Diary room session for accepting it, dubbing her a "loser" , Also Emmett would've continued playing in this comp if BB did not catch him take his hand off the rail. To me it appears that psychologically "Jemmett" operated in a universe where some rules applied to them, and some did not. As I noted earlier the fundamental attribution error is part of the equation here and the contestants have free reign to justify any of their actions. I'm not naive, I know that BB is a game that has lying and scheming embedded in its architecture, but in the end as Dan Gheesling's two contrasting finalist performances indicate, someone always does it better.
So here's my personal verdict, on who should always be the BB Champion. In the following criteria,
1) It should be someone who followed the rules of the game to a fault (The judicious player)
2) It should be someone who executed a balanced game competitively and socially. I usually call this the "finesse" factor. And the jury vote is the final litmus test of this final criterion, except for the first time ever....tonight. As we all saw, it was not. Quite the interesting outcome
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I believe, that if Jillian wanted to be a true Champion...one with a capital C. She would have recognized Topaz's mistake for what it was a mistake, not a technicality and forfeited the title to Gary. It's so ironic, almost hilarious that someone with such a demonstrated disregard for the rules of the game should accept a win from that game, when the rules (arbitrarily in this case) makes it fortuitous to do so. Personally if I were in Jillian's shoes I wouldn't want to win in this way, because at the end of the day I believe her acceptance of this win will eclipse all of her accolades and the history she made getting to this point. So what's better, a flawless win and your integrity intact or $100,000?
As I wrote in my previous Big Brother post, all of these contestants have lives outside the house. What hurts me in Jillian's case is that she's a teacher...and tonight (and by extension all season) she may have taught the worst lesson possible to her current and future students. Tonight's win wasn't just a controversial one....but in my eyes a Pyrrhic one as well.
this is where you should understand that they're under so much stress in this competition. but nope. emmett and jillian are just idiots, that explains it. never mind that talla and gary can't get it at all either.
