jilytober day two
02 : lily and james’s first date
they’d fallen into a friendship so easily. their personalities and quirks and really all of themselves fell so easily into this easygoing, calming, amazing, close-to-perfect relationship.
james hadn’t expected that. yes, he had been wandering after her for a while, and yes, he had been the one who serenaded her with the song proclaiming “eternal love” and “being the only true ones”. still, he’d adjusted to the idea of never really having her as his.
lily however knew that this would happen. she’d known since early sixth year when his hesitant smiles and jokes to her had become endearing and cute rather than annoying and excessive. she’d known, but had stayed away, telling herself that it wouldn’t end well, that they couldn’t make it work, that she would fall for him but he wouldn’t. she was keeping away in fear.
yet, he’d found his way in. one fortunate 3 am meeting in the common room had led to her spilling all her thoughts on severus, the boy who had been her first wizarding friend. james was so kind, so understanding- she fell even harder for his character and then his appearance. he laughed like he knew the world’s answers to any riddle; he smiled like he was joy; his eyes twinkled like they knew you; and he carried himself like he was a proud lion. and from there the easy friendship began.
eventually, it bled into days and weeks and months. times when she’d come back from the three broomsticks with rosy cheeks and laughter-filled breaths. times when she’d hold a small smile to her heart after racing back from the quidditch field ablaze with victory. times when she’d lose herself in the haze of joy. times when she’d slip into sleep easily with james warm against her.
the quips and teases asking about when the first date would be were plentiful. but the truth was- they didn’t have a first date; they just had all their times together, all their times of happiness and comfort and so much more.
they were lily and james. and they weren’t defined by dates. they didn’t need to have a first date. they already had all their times together, times of first kisses, and first times, and proposals. for they were james potter and lily evans, and they had fallen in love just as easily as they had fallen into friendship and dating and each other.
