The 2nd album by the Byrds was released on 6 December 1965, less than 6 months after their debut.
The Byrds went into the studio on 28 June 1965, a week after the release of their first album, and tensions between the members were already developing. Jim (later Roger) McGuinn had become close with producer Terry Melcher and manager Jim Dickson and David Crosby believed that they were helping McGuinn take over the band and keep Crosby's songs off the album. Other band members (mostly Crosby again) were also becoming jealous of Gene Clark, who as principal songwriter was making more money than the rest of the group. Dickson was also becoming critical of Melcher (Dickson wanted to produce himself) and dismissed Melcher after the recording sessions.
Of the 12 songs on the album, 3 were by Clark, McGuinn co-wrote 2 (one with Crosby), and the rest were covers (including 2 by Bob Dylan).
The lead single, and album title, "Turn! Turn! Turn!" was from the Book of Ecclesiates put to music by Pete Seeger (which had been arranged by McGuinn for Judy Collins in 1963).
The single went to #1 and the album peaked at #17 in the US.
