Jim Nothing (James Sullivan, Auckland, New Zealand) is a former member of Salad Boys and X-Ray Charles. He's had a couple of releases before including a cool cassette split with Wurld Series (on Christchurch label Melted Ice Cream).

"Grey Eyes, Grey Lynn" is being co-released by Meritorio Records and the aforementioned Melted Ice Cream. This is great indie rock/pop that fits in nicely with both old and new New Zealand music. I love that the Bandcamp write up embraces the Flying Nun comparison by mentioning The Clean, Snapper and Look Blue Go Purple. Saying that a New Zealand band embraces their amazing musical history isn't a knock of sameness - it's a recognition of history and excellent musical taste.

Melted Ice Cream (Christchurch) introduced me to Salad Boys several years back.  They also released Terror of the Deep, Transistors, and Centre Negative.  I’ve really enjoyed this label over the course of the last 4(ish) years.

“Sickest Smashes from Arson City” is a Melted Ice Cream compilation of the Christchurch, New Zealand scene.  I used to associate Christchurch almost exclusively with The Bats - until now.  Christchurch is clearly a vibrant music scene and this CD (I think it’s Melted Ice Cream’s first CD release....are CDs going to be the new hip format?) comes with a 12 page booklet.

There is so much to dig into here.  My favorites so far are The Teasers and Jim Nothing tracks.  All tracks are previously unreleased.  The artwork alone is worth the price of admission.

Last I’d heard of New Zealand band Wurld Series they had a great split cassette on Melted Ice Cream with Jim Nothing.  Now they’ve got “Anthology” on Voyager Golden Records (Portland, Oregon).

I love that they called their cassette “Anthology”  - a nice nod to The Clean.  While I would say you can hear echoes of The Clean, I can hear more Guided By Voices and Pavement.  But there is an undercurrent of late 80s early 90s Flying Nun.  I mean, Wurld Series claim that The 3D’s are their greatest Flying Nun influence.  They also profess their love for Terror of the Deep (I bought an amazing cassette on Melted Ice Cream a while back).
