Despite some of the flaws in the script, I think Love and Destiny presents a more nuanced moral dilemma than in Three Lives. 

Are you the same person when you’ve lost all your memories? Are you the same person when you reincarnate? Is the soul the only thing that defines you as a person and binds you between lives? What is a soul then? What is the essence of a person?

We see two men trying to save two different parts of the same person. Saving one part means destroying the other. One could make the argument that Jiu Chen is close to loving the whole person, both Ling Xi and Ah Mo, but in the end, he still chooses to sacrifice Ah Mo for Ling Xi. He doesn’t understand what all this means for Ah Mo and by disregarding her feelings and her (ignorant) state of mind, he ends up hurting her. 

Ah Mo is Ling Xi and Ling Xi is Ah Mo. There’s no way of separating them, but at the same time they’re two different people and should be seen as such. 

What makes a person a person?

Three Lives was about unifying all three identities of the protagonist. Love and Destiny asks us to separate these identities and to see the “mortal” identity as a person in her own right, not just a phase or a shadow of the immortal identity. It hits hard. 

Ah Mo has her own dreams, ambitions, and feelings. She has her own family. She wants to live a full life. 

Jiu Chen telling Ah Mo to hang tight and wait for death so that she can become Ling Xi again is far too much and insensitive. Ah Mo doesn’t know who Ling Xi is and she doesn’t care.
