I get not liking a musical artist. You don't have to like every single one who exists, but why are we hating on Benson Boone, especially his song Mystical Magical?
I have seen so many videos and posts that go "oh my GOD you can just HEAR the mormonism!" Or "You can tell he was raised white mormon" or or or. So many people are boiling him and his music down to being mormon.
1. He is ex mormon???? Like, saying you can't like his music or that his music sucks bc he is currently mormon is literally just incorrect??? He left the religion, doesn't associate with it, has stated he does not believe or hold the conservative views that some mormon individuals hold. Like, ofc he's gonna have some show of religious influence. He was RAISED mormon. I was RAISED Lutheran, I still have religious influence despite not BEING Lutheran. I feel like we need to stop boiling ppl down to how they were raised. And this is an overarching thing. Am I weary of Mormons due to prior incidents that weren't positive? Yes. Do i believe every mormon is bad? No. Just because someone is of a specific religion doesn't necessarily mean that they're an unkind and/or bigoted person.
2. The song is about how the right type of love, when it finally happens, makes simple stuff like ice cream and movies feel great. It's about the back and forth of being afraid to commit to the relationship, finally feeling amazing once you actually fully commit to it. When that love happens, it makes simple ass things feel great!! It's not bc he was raised mormon that he thinks simply ice cream is one of the best moments that someone in a relationship will feel. It's literally about the whirlwind of new love and how it makes things great.
I also get when people dislike covers, especially queen covers. We have seen so many covers that did queen songs dirty, especially bohemian rhapsody. But people saying that he disrespected Freddy??? That's bull. He had Brian May there, which obviously wouldn't happen unless May himself approved, and he fucking slayed?? Listen, if you wanna hate on anyone during that performance, hate on the crowd who was dead as hell, not Benson Boone who literally did so fucking good.
And one last thing! His clothes. He isn't appropriating a style, be it queer fashion or Freddy mercury's specifically. Benson Boone has clearly stated and communicated that his style and his music is influenced by Stevie Wonder, ELTON FUCKING JOHN, Billy Joel, Elvis, Aretha Franklin, Adele, Bruno Mars. Have people not ever seen those people's performances and styles? Have they not listening to their music?? HE IS LITERALLY INSPIRED AND INFLUENCED BY ELTON JOHN FFS- That's all you need to know to realize that HE HAS A CERTAIN STYLE.
I'm so tired of ppl making such blanket statements about stuff that isn't even relevant to the here and now. People can dislike his music, people don't have to be a fan, people can do whatever, and I'll respect that. But for fucks sake, don't make irrelevant information your ENTIRE reason for disliking him. And don't hate on the people who do. Because goddammit, I like Benson Boone and his music.
I'm trying to better understand the aroace spec especially bc I'm trying to understand if being demi means I'm technically on it but also bc it's one of the specs I understand least. I'm working to better understand it. Learning resources appreciated.
