The set-up was perfect. Jacob assumed so, at least. Frank certainly hadn’t told him otherwise. Jacob settled into his rolling desk chair that he had pulled out into the living room just in time to hear Ben’s key click in the lock. Frank stood up on Jacob’s lap, ready to jump down to go greet his (favourite, Jacob begrudgingly admitted) dad, but the cat settled back down easily enough with a few long strokes along his back. Jacob waited until Ben had taken his shoes off and turned the lights on to slowly spin around in his chair, cat on his lap, and dramatically tilt his head so his glasses slid down his nose. “Ah, Ben. I’ve been expecting you.”

Maybe he should pick up more shifts at the bank– this whole idea was a sign that boredom had started to get to him– but he also had barely seen his roommate as of late, and he was nothing if not dedicated to the bit. He motioned towards the couch and table in front of his desk chair. “I made coffee and laid out biscuits. And now...” He paused for dramatic effect and removed his glasses from his face with one hand to gesture with them. “–We are going to hang out.”

“I don’t want too much colour,” Jacob informed Ben, coming to a stop as his cane touched the bottom of one of the racks of shirts lining the men’s section of the department store. “But I do believe I would look unbearably sexy in animal print. Thoughts?”

“He draws enjoyment from a good chin scratch,” Jacob commented about their cat as he waited for the glass in his hand to fill from the tap. The faint echo of the stream of water pouring into the cup reduced, so he shut the faucet off the moment before it overflowed and took a few steps towards the couch to hold the glass out towards Ben. “Is tonight a night for liquor and otherwise, or shall we flourish in each other’s company unaffected?”
