“I believe I appreciate the company even more than the extra set of hands,” Jacob mused to his sister, hiking the bag higher on his shoulder with the hand that wasn’t occupied with his cane. “Last time I played packhorse and carted supplies to the infirmary, two trips were required. Tell me Carly, in a scenario where you were offered the opportunity to sprout two additional arms, would you accept? A new world of possibilities would open up before you, yet I venture the sight would careen past ‘off-putting’ and land squarely in the territory of ‘gruesome’. It’s a trade-off.”

“He draws enjoyment from a good chin scratch,” Jacob commented about their cat as he waited for the glass in his hand to fill from the tap. The faint echo of the stream of water pouring into the cup reduced, so he shut the faucet off the moment before it overflowed and took a few steps towards the couch to hold the glass out towards Ben. “Is tonight a night for liquor and otherwise, or shall we flourish in each other’s company unaffected?”
