Chapter 1: This Is A Horrible Idea
“There’s no time.” Superman angrily stated.
“I beg to differ, if we send a small group of scouts, we’ll be better prepared just in case.” Jade argued. “I think I speak for all of us when I say that we would be walking into battle completely unprepared, which could be a costly mistake.”
Wren gave her friend a small nod. “Yeah, I agree with mom.”
“I do as well.” Luthor pipped. “With Canary.”
“All in favour?” Cyborg asked.
Every member of the league and Titans lifted their hands, except Superman - and Batman, though his glaring eyes at Superman said enough.
“So it’s settled, Canary, Comet, Jester and Anubis, you’ll be going to Apokolips for recon.”
All four heroes went wide eyed. “Are you sure that’s a good idea? We all know how great we were at recon while on the team.” Wren asked.
“Not to mention Jester isn’t exactly very stealthy.” Adrien scoffed.
“Well you can shove stealthy up your a-“
“-Team, enough. If you believe it is best, we will go to Apokolips.” Jade stated.
“You leave in an hour,” Batman commanded.
Nodding vehemently, the four left to their quarters to prepare for the mission.
Jade was elated to try out her new stealth armour.
Clandestine, but functional in battle. The black kevlar chest plate was comfortable, compared to her mothers old outfit which pushed her annoyingly tiny bust way too high. The long sleeve undershirt was greatly appreciated, she didn’t like showing much skin when going into battle. Black kevlar pants came with the new suit, she thanked the gods for the new knee pads. Being a superhero is not exactly easy on your knees.
The new boots had an adequate - and soundless - heel, another thing she was incredibly pleased with. And her new mask. It hugged her jaw nicely, and the new canary cry amplifier was lovely to work with. Blonde hair would be too hard to hide, so she kept her glamour charm in her pocket, just in case. She quickly braided her hair to the side and she headed to the armory to fetch her weapons. As a part-time Justice Leaguer, she got to store most of her things in the armory. She wasn’t a huge fan of the League’s policies so she didn’t want to be tied down completely by them.
Lucy’s stealth suit wasn’t very stealthy. As she was wanting to stray away from her father’s antics, she stuck to more reds and blues like her mother. Her stealth was a navy catsuit, zipped up about ¾ of the way, otherwise it felt too restricting and like it was choking her. She stole some black vans, opting for them instead of the fancy soles and heels and shit. Her holster was already situated on her chest, and her combat knives were hidden beside her ankles.
She wasn’t necessarily a member of the League, but being Jade’s wife - and a vigilante of the sorts - she was close with most of the members and Brucie had said that he would provide her with some armour so she was safe on patrols. Once he realized that she was nothing like her father and never wanted to be like him, that is.
Wren wore her usual patrol uniform, except it was all black, stealthy right? She also added a hood to her top for added stealthiness. She was an honorary member of the League, as she despised the majority of their policies, but she was still considered someone who should have the fancy armour. She had daggers and throwing knives hidden in compartments all over. On the inside of her wrists, her outer thighs, ankles and hips, even in her bra.
She couldn’t wait for Jade to question her outfit choices, like a mother would. Maybe she should bug Aqualad too? That would be fun!
Adrien, who wasn’t a member of the League, but a member of the Outlaws, didn’t have a special stealth suit. So he just wore his usual white and black checkered suit. The belt on his waist was filled with explosives, ammunition and throwing stars. He had his fathers old scabbard strapped behind him with two katanas, exactly like his late father. Pistols were holstered next to his upper thighs and in front of his chest, knives were stashed in the inside of his wrists, his outer thighs and ankles.
Adrien, Lucy and Wren had all made their ways to the command room, where Batman would brief them completely on their tasks.
While travelling to the room, Wren was stopped by the Flash. He placed his hand on her shoulder, a worried look on his face. “Wren, look kid.” He started, “I just want to stress this as much as I can. Do not engage, we’ve fought Darkseid before and we barely won. As great as a team you all are, you won’t win against him. I’m not exactly happy with the fact that you’re going, but Bats chose your team, so I have to respect that, just please come back home in one piece.”
Wren scoffed, “Please, I’m coming back just to spite Wally for all of the times that he gave us up when we were on the team!”
Giving a soft smile, Barry hugged Wren tightly, “Just please, come back.”
The same conversation had been going on between Green Arrow and his daughter after she had picked up her retractable spear, shield and canary bombs.
“Jade, there’s no doubt that you’re a badass, just like your mother.” Arrow laughed lightly, “But this is worse than anything that you guys have fought, even worse than the whole Vandal Savage mind controlling thing.”
“Dad, we know the drill, find the best places to observe without being seen, observe and report back, we know to only engage if we have no choice.”
“I just really hope that you won’t have to make that choice.” He muttered, pulling his daughter into his chest.
“I love you dad.”
“Love you too kiddo.”
They pulled away, and Jade headed to the command center.
In the other hallway, a different conversation took place between Adrien and Wren.
“Hey Adrien?”
“Yeah.”
“I know that we never would’ve worked out, but did you love me? When we were together?”
Addy was taken aback at the sudden question and answered without hesitation. “I loved you more than all the stars in the sky and I still do. I never stopped. But now my heart belongs to Jason, and yours will belong to whoever you want it to.” The longing look shared between them was brief.
“And what if it’s with you?”
“Then I’ll carry it and protect it. And when you decide you’re ready, I’ll give it to the next person you choose.” Addy stopped in the hallway and grasped Wren’s hand. “Just don’t expect mine to be with you.”
“Thanks for being a good friend, and an even better first love. I’m a shitty person and I did some fucked up things when we were together and it wasn’t cool and I’m sorry. But I’m really honestly happy that you’re happy with Jason.”
“We were kids trying to figure love out. I’d be surprised if there weren’t bumps and bruises along the way.” He lightly kissed her knuckles. “I’m grateful for our relationship because it taught us both a lot. And I hope that we are able to come back from this fight and you can find the solace in yourself to be happy either by yourself or with someone else.” He dropped her hand before walking away towards the command centre, and she followed.
